Further to another thread, I had asked what was dissconnected what a hose blocked with a screw was; turned out it was the EGR valve.
On doing some research into it this is a common thing to keep the engine clean and improve performance, but, i was also seeing comments that it was in fact illegal, these comments seem to be from America, is the same true of the UK?
My car past it's MOT just before I bought it, with apparently no problem, is the fact it is tucked under the engine cover the reason it is not inspected and thus not failed or fined?

Major Edit!!
I deleted my comment to prevent misinformation lurking in the world wide web!!
Thanks very much Crasher for the correction (see below).

NOx doesn't burn , recirculating it prevents good combustion replacing with NOx instead of oxygen gives a lesser burn and lowers combustion temps below 2500°C this produces less NOx.

I looked into EGR blank and even de-cat last year. They are rather touchy topic to go into, and there is no straight YES/NO answer if you dig deeper...
EGR.
Thank you for you reply.
I get no warning lights at all.
I've had this car since last saturday so was unaware of the ERG. My car is very responsive and does 58 on average, I have even seen it registering 200mpg, on a flat, but I assume that's just the computer adjusting, either way it is very good. I have seen that the increase in mpg is not massive compair with it being on.
I assume the answer to build up of fuel is to clean it regularly, over what period of time does this build up take place, every 6 months or so till it affects consumption etc?
As for the warning light, I had an ABS warning light staying on for a while, this was before the mot, the MOT tester, who I have been using since the mid 90's, told me about it and said, just remove the bulb from behind the cluster, he said, 'we don't have to know werethe problem is coming from or what's causing it, but we have to act if we see the light'.
On the other hand if it is actually working, it could always be reconnected a week before the mot test. There again, it must have past it's emmisions test.

Yes it is illegal in UK Type Approval and EU law "to modify, disconnect or otherwise impair the performance of any mandatory legislative emissions equipment", or something along those lines,I can't find the exact quote.

it is also illegal under type approval to modify an exhaust to make it louder. type approval came in circa 2001. before then you can do more or less what you like. after then you cant. check your log book. if it gives emissions and noise levels then its type approved.

My car's registration is may 2000. One problem all the service books and so on that came with it aren't for this car; I've ordered vehicle history so I can write and ask about it from previous owners.
The last had it 5 months, the one before that 3 years from 2013, then only 2 before that, so I culd be lucky.
