Hi (first post).

I'm very close to buying an A6 estate (possibly an allroad). Ive always wanted one but could never really afford it however following being made redundant recently I have both a need to replace my company car and a few quid to do it with.

I've been researching the available A6s for some time now and am quite close to biting the bullet but I've had a case of last minute jitters over potential issues of a 5-10 year old premium car.

My last 2 cars have been Audis (TT and A3, but now I've got a family hence the estate) and I've had no problems with them, but they were brand new leases so probably not generally comparable? Therefore I'm hoping for some advice on the likelihood of something going majorly wrong with the car in the 5-6 years I'm planning on keeping it.

I'm looking at a 2010 A6 le man's and a 2011 A6 all road avant s line, both 3.0 tdis, one manual. 70k-80k miles on them already and I plan to do about 10k a year max on top. Are failures common around 100k etc?

Any comments are appreciated as I hope I've come to the right place. If not, apologies, and please tell me where is best to ask.

Many thanks for any help you can provide,
Hovis75.

It's always possible to have bad luck but generally they seem good and if you have a local specialist shouldn't cost too much to maintain.

Mines an 07 with 120k and I've replaced tyres (which aren't cheap on a leman) and front pads in my 14 months of owning it. I do now need front drop links which aren't expensive.

Make sure you go for a tip auto (with Quattro) to avoid dual mass and clutch issues.

Are there any you can post links to?

My 2006 3.0 Quattro has 250k manual no clutch or dual mass ever on it, just the clutch pedal has squeaked since 150k its chiped to 280bhp only issues i have had are the inlet flaps, throttle body serpentine belt tensioner and bottom pulley prices for parts only £200 £200 and the belt and pulley n tensioner £350 (bitch of a job) possible injector failure now which could be very expensive but shes done some miles

Thanks for the replies folks.
Am I allowed to post links to Autotrader on here? I could show you the options I’m currently mulling over.
I’ve never driven an automatic apart from an Octavia VRS extended test drive, which I never fully got to grips with in the 5 hours - so I was looking for a manual initially but there’s not too many of them about. Are the tiptronics that much better?

Cheers.

Little goes wrong with the 3.0tdi, but when it does it can be expensive. Items like swirl flaps and injectors can run in to £1000....
Late models tend to avoid injector issues, but be prepared to get your hands dirty if the flaps fail.
Still the best engine in the Audi range.

The allroad will have air suspension which can be very expensive to repair and would most likely need work at that age and mileage. The late model which you are looking at, have the early issues with chains and injectors sorted. My C6 was an early one and I had no issues and it was running very well at 10 years and 130k when I traded it in. General consensus is to get the tiptronic serviced at between 80-100k which is about £375 at a specialist transmission shop (not many about but a good one in Glasgow so not too far for you).
Le Mans were well specced but make sure they have the options you want as retrofitting is very expensive. Also worth getting a VCDS cable to read faults before you buy especially if it is a private sale. The cable is also useful if you intend doing work yourself.
Make sure the EPB works when you test drive without too much noise.

If you are only intending to do 10k miles per year it may be better to consider petrol engines esp if it's going to be used for short trips. Nice though the 3.0 TDI engine is you will struggle to get more than 30mpg out of an Allroad even if you are using it only for long trips and I would also worry about the complexities and potential costs of the air suspension at that age.

And at around 80k it may not be too long before you run into DPF problems. Check for rattle from chains, mega bucks. Its a pretty solid lump so apart from the inevitable bad luck issues its difficult to go wrong. Don't forget from 11 on you can get the new shape.

if you've got the cash have a look at auction.
i bought my 2.0 a6 s-line 2008 4 years ago for £7000 with an immaculate service history and its still worth about £5000 now and i don't intend swapping it yet.
