View Full Version : Front Assist - can be dangerous

Yesterday we were travelling with 5 up for the first time since ownership in January.

We were travelling along a narrow B road (lane), a road I take very often. At one location is a right bend of approx 30 degress, with a track at 90 degrees to the left. I could see a car waiting to exit as we approached. As we got level or just past the car, Front Assist decided to stamp on the brakes. It must have been monitoring the cars nose just protruding before deciding all was not well...when in fact it was. Needless to say we were all rather taken aback with such a braking maneuver.

Reading the manual FA comes on by default when the car is started so must be switched off...I must remember this.

Fortunately it will not be in my lifetime.

What insurance company is going to insure them at an affordable cost. I just cannot see it.

I drive a mk7 Golf and I can predict when front assist will go off.
It will beep first before braking, if you indicate, turn away from obstacle, accelerate (just a little is enough) or hit the brakes reasonably hard it will not kick the 'brake nudge' and following initiating emergency braking.

The audible warning was switched off (it's now on) and the car braked after passing the other vehicle. I have looked through the Maxidot and wonder if the setting COMFORT makes any difference or is that just while it's operating during ACC.

mine operates if ACC is on or not.

Don't think I can switch it off

Correct but mine can be switched off using the button on the end of the ACC control lever and then right hand steering wheel control.

Yet another experience yesterday. I was travelling along a short length of road, low speed and in 2nd gear. The road curving to the left and a coach coming towards me who was very close, if not on, the middle line. The Passat must have thought it was coming at me so carried out a quick, short, brake sequence :(
