I have an a4 1.9 130 bhp and its recently had new camshaft water pump timjng belt anf the oil was filled correctly now after a few weeks theres alot more oil showing on the dipstick than wat was put in? Would I be right in thinking water is getting into the oil? Maybe head gasket time?

The water level looks to be jn the same position? The oil is very grey and very thin looking?

you dont want to be running it with contaminated engine oil or you will turn a repairable engine into scrap. how high on the dipstick is the oil. has the level in the coolant res dropped . you would notice if 1/2 litre of coolant had gone , and that would raise the oil by about the amount between min and max on the dipstick. remove the dipstick and sniff it. does it smell of diesel or coolant or just of oil. remove the oil filler cap with the engine running. is there any chuffing ?

The oil was a good 4-5mmm past the full mark and the coolant is just under the max line thankfully its off road just now while I sort a few things on it, il give it a smell and remove the oil filler cap tomorrow what does it mean if I can smell diesel?

Did the guy that replaced the camshaft have the injectors out or disturb them - thinking injector o rings now passing diesel into the oil. Could also be the tandem pump but i think thats usually oil into the diesel, giving a black fuel filter.
When you say the oil is very grey, which of 50 shades? Is it like battleship or black grey. Is there any cottage cheese gunk inside the oil filler cap. Water emulsified oil looks more brown black to my mind and it doesn't sound like you've lost loads of coolant to the oil.
If the oil is grey grey that almost suggests bearing material, but not sure you'd pick that up just from the dipstick. and I think you'd have noticed knocking or rattling by now. If that's the case then the recent camshaft work needs checking out.

That looks like typical used engine oil to me, the viscosity of modern oils is very thin, and it would act almost like water when its really hot when you drain the sump pan.

Its not used tho it got new oil with the camshaft and its only been driven a mile at most?

Oil in a diesel turns black very quick.
Are you sure you've checked the oil level correctly? Did you check it straight after the work was carried out?
Maybe it's just over filled.

So you might have nothing to worry about! Keep an eye on it and enjoy the sunshine.

Just a thought - you'll only get a true read on the dipstick on a dead flat surface, of course, so wondering if you checked the oil in a slope at some point, giving you the apparently increased level between readings?
