My 1999 1.6 8V Auto has started to drop out more LCD pixels.
What is the best way to repair it?
Where to go to get it done?

Which display?

What speedo do you have (large or small MFA)?

As it's an Automatic, with the Gear selection information in the display I'm pretty sure it's the large MFA

Are you sure? Maybe post a photo - ideally taken out so part number and manufacturer are visible.

I know there are half screen ones for automatics - see photos in below ebay ad....
VW Golf 4 Tacho Benzin Automatik - Kilometerstand frei aenderbar - mit Login/PIN | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-4-Tacho-Benzin-Automatik-Kilometerstand-frei-aenderbar-mit-Login-PIN-/191813064865)

I might be able to fix yours for you, clone it to another unit or fit a used one to your car.

I'll get a picture ASAP
It's definitely a larger screen than that as it has miles to empty and other info on the LCD above the Gear selection

If the screen is about twice the size of the one in the ebay link then it is a full MFA and if it has MTE enabled it is immo3 generation (although you can also have MTE on half screen MFA speedos).

It's definitely the larger screen then.
If it is an immo3 what are the approximate costs to repair the LCD?

Would need to know which supplier made your speedo (Motometer, BOSCH or VDO).

Undo the two philips screws at bottom of steering pillar trim, top part lifts off and you can unclip the trim below speedo.
The undo two TX10 screws that hold speedo in place, then you can tilt it forward and should be able to see manfacturer marking and part numbers.

Cost will depend on what display is fitted, some need soldering in place (contacts are SMD size so it is pretty tricky).

I'll get photos, info etc and post them.
Thank you very much for your help.

Did you have a chance to take photo yet or scan it?

OK, I've finally received the car.

After removing the Instrument Cluster here are the details:

Part No: 1J0 920 921 A

Man: VDO (1)

VDO 110.008.958/016

VWZ7Z0X1487507

030599 3 3327

V 12

BZT G750 669H

It has a Small MFA

- Miles to empty
- Temp
- Gear selection

I hope that tells you all you need to know?

Hi, was away for the weekend.

I'll have a look if I can source a LCD panel. Should not be an issue to get it.

Thank you very much.
Could you give me an idea of the costs involved?
Can I just courier the Cluster to you for the repair?
Regards

Courier is fine, depending where you are might be able to collect it or you drop it off.

Will see how much the displays are tonight and let you know.
Think the smaller ones are around 25 pounds though (much cheaper than the full size ones).

Had a look and the 34 pin LCDs for half size MFA are more expensive than thought.... 50 quid for part (cost to me).
Including return postage you'd probably be looking at around 80 quid.... could have sold you a second hand cluster without faulty display but that went to a German buyer a few months ago...

Well I'm in Oxted, Surrey.
That sounds good to me.
How readily is the part available and approximately how long does the repair take?

Part should take a two/three days to come. It'll take about an afternoon or evening to do.
Altogether maybe a week or two.... if I can sort out the hot air gun on my SMD re-work station that is.... which just started to act up this afternoon :(
