View Full Version : Tyres and Tyre Wear

The tyres on my 2 year old S-line are almost down to the wear markers and with a holiday coming up when I shall be covering several miles I think it is time to fit new tyres .... but what sort ?

I would appreciate any views on which tyres any of you have fitted, why you fitted them and what you think of them.

Currently I have the factory fitted Bridgestone Turanza which have lasted for 18,700 miles but I notice that they are not amongst the best for fuel efficiency, grip or noise level. The best I have seen so far for these aspects is the Dunlop Sport Maxx RT MFS XL with a rating of C for fuel efficiency, A for grip and 68db for noise.

Incidentally this is the first car that I have owned where the rear tyres have worn more than the front tyres. Anyone else experienced this ?

Thanks, Janner

Is it a Quattro? The split front/rear is more rear-biased which would explain it. If FWD I find it strange if the rear wore out first.

We now have RT2 as the BTCC kindly reminds us .

New also and notable .

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3
Michelin Pilot Sport 4

There is the new Continental Sport Contact 6 but I expect it to be like the 5 , a tremendous tyre test shoot out winner but in the long term wears out quickly.

I got 8K out of the fronts on my A4 quattro, Continential SC5.

Will be changing to Hankook S1 or Michelin PS4 whenever the rears wear down.

I ditched the Bridgestone Turanzas on mine after a few thousand miles-they were horrible! Fitted Michelin super sports and will be fitting PS3s soon when I change back to summers. Michelins are great in the wet but there are a lot of good tyres out there.

Mine came with Bridgestone Turanzas which didn't wear well, and replaced with Michelin Primacy 3s which I have found much better. Next tyres are Avon ZZ5s and are on my spare wheels ready to fit when Primacys wear out.

I'll report back when I've fitted the Avons.

Incidentally I got the Avons fitted for £87.90 per tyre but Audi quoted me over £200 per tyre!!

Had Pirelli PZero 20' on my current & previous BE; last time I got 18k from some fronts and on course for the same. Good all rounder imo

Another vote for the pzero's - I had them on my old s-line and and on the new FL - impressed by them doing over 20k miles out of each front pair. Some people say they are noisy, in my experience they are fine taking account of their size and how well they wear. On previous cars I've had most of the above brands and found that generally the more you pay, the better the product, with the exception of Bridgestone which I had on a Honda Accord and they were worn out in 10k...

I haven't looked at the spec on Avon's but I will. Where did you get them at that price ?

My favourites
Good year, still had 6mm after 18ks, quiet and very good tyre for grip on all conditions
Dunlop sport maxx TT on my old golf gtd , 25ks+ In the fronts and grip was very good
Michelin PS3, good grip all round but not as quiet as the good year.
Bridgestone turanza were awful I thought. First few ks were good then after that apart from bone dry it was awful.

I wouldn't read too much into tyre reviews. They are testing a new set so it doesn't prove how good they are after a few ks or how long they last.
I've tried so many tyres and always found the premium brand had better longevity and continue to grip throughout the life of the tyre.
I've had some budget tyres on my old golf and they were good but didn't last. Toyos were good but got about 7-8ks on the fronts. So it's a bit false economy going for budgets.
I always go by don't skimp on tyres and brakes. These are the only things that need to work on a car 😉

Had 3 sets on my golf over 100ks and they were brilliant!! Originally sport maxx then last 2 sets were the TT.
Mainly motorway miles though(and my wife drives like miss daisy😉)
On 205/55/16 they were cheap too

I had the RT's on a Mondeo a few years back and they lasted less than half the distance Michelins managed. Very quiet and grippy tyres though.

IMHO the AO Bridgestone Turanza’s should be illegal. Bad in the dry and dangerous in the wet… noisy too. I swapped to Michelin Primacy 3's about a month after picking the car up. My Nokian WR A3 winters are considerably better than the Bridgestone's... in summer conditions :aargh4:

Well the a6 is a 2 ton barge compared to the golf so the wear rate will be faster. This is the other thing when reading reviews is that the same tyre in different cars will act differently and wear differently.
I agree with the turanza. They were awful after a few thousand miles. When I got rid of my pre fl the turanza had about 2.5mm tread and I braked for a tractor coming out a field and all I got was abs going mental, thought I was going to write it off as I was driving to the dealership to trade it in 😄

Agree on the Turanzas, truly dangerous. Bad in the dry and awful in anything damp or wet. Just couldn't get the power down out of corners or roundabouts. Had a bad experience going round a corner in town doing about 20mph and the car started going sideways. That was when they had to go! Put them on my wife's car and they were great though but it is lighter and less power.

This might be used as evidence at the inquest :biglaugh:

No such luck, still stuck with her!! Took them off when we changed to winters and got rid as they were down to 2-3mm. The winters are now getting low but her new car will be here soon. Hopefully with good tyres.

Ah well I ordered barum bravuris tyres (which got good good reviews for my old A6) from tyre-shopper.co.uk but they were out of stock so they offered me the Avon ZZRs instead...

I've just ordered another pair of the Dunlop Sport Maxx RT tyres for the rear after doing about 26,000 miles on the original Turanzas (replaced the fronts last summer). They were about £250 from blackcircles.com for the pair (fitted).

Regarding the fuel efficiency, according to the Black Circles website an 'A' rated tyre will save you about 6 litres of fuel over the life of the tyre, compared to a 'G' rated tyre. If that's true then it hardly seems worth worrying about!

i am also in need of new tyres soon, but even though 3 litre quattro fronts have worn far far more than rears, probably half life in rear tyres left but fronts almost to telltale

Update ....
Decided in the end on 4 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 for my A6 s-line. Now covered 1,000 miles on them and very pleased with grip and positive steering. Better than the previous Bridgestone Turanzas when they were new and hopefully wear will be better too.

Nice tyre , whats the rim protector like , any pics ?

Considering them myself along with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 .

Rim protector on the eagle f1 and Michelin are pretty substantial. My Mrs hasn't curbed the wheels yet so that's either down to my good chat with her about her driving or the rim protector doing its job. Most would say the latter 😄

Must be an amazing tyre fitter to get the tyre to align with the spokes!:biglaugh:

Couldn't quite see on the thumbnail until I enlarged it. Gotta show my son now as he's just done his art GCSE and from tomorrow I'm obliged to refit smaller OE-sized wheels as the insurance changess overnight.
