Hi all,
I am new and hoping for some help before me and the mutt suffocate !
My 2001 tdi (180,000 miles) has had some intermittent electrical issues...mainly bulbs and fuses going way too often.
That seems to have calmed down.
A few months ago the dash stopped lighting up and i was told I needed to replace it!
Then mysteriously it started working again so now i can see how fast I am going in at night.
The nexy day i left key in ignition by accident and after charging none of the windows not sunroof work.
I tried a hard start by touching the neg lead to positive terminal.
I hhave looked at the CCM under the steering column and it looks ok.No corrosion and all wires look ok to me.
I then tried the key in door trick and the windows all open fine and close too.
On the VCDS no fault comes up because it will not go into the CCM at all.

If the windows open when i hold the key in door to lock does that mean the CCM is fine or could it still mean I need to replace the CCM?
or could it be something else.
many thanks in advance
Tania

is the sunroof switch on the door ?

Check Fuse for windows , there might be 2 . One for switch and 1 for windows & that's why windows go down with key

I would start at the wires going from car to door, cut the rubber at the bottom and look for broken wires. Cutting the bottom means water will fall out

If the wires seem okay then check for power at switch with ignition on

If no power then check Relay

If power then faulty switch control panel

So now I am confused.
This morning the windows and roof work

all I did yesterday was touch the neg pole to positive terminal to try and reset / hard start.
I also pulled out the CCM , looked at it and put it back in.
Pulled fuses out to look and put them back-
nothing

Is it possible that it took overnight to reset?
Windows and sunroof were not working for 2 weeks. Fuses were checked over and over
now i can hear an audible click when i pull fuse 14 and put it back in whereas prior there was no noise at all.

I wonder if the dash light will now not work again.
Feels like there is poltergeist in the car...as i said at the beginning...intermittent faults that seem to right themselves...and it rained all day yesterday for first time in weeks so it is unlikely to be damp ingressing and then drying out.

I had issues with my old golf mk4 which I had for 6 years before I sold it during my owner ship I had veriouse faults with the windows one of which was like you have it was caused by a faulty ignition switch which would not supply power to the various electrical systems yet would start and drive perfectly. Another issue was on mine was the failure of Relay 109 which when failed stopped the car starting it would just wind over. Replaced the relay then it started this relay powers a lot of items such as these.

- Glow plug relay
- Fuse 32
ECM
Fuel quantity adjuster
- Fuse 34
Cold start injector
Waste gate bypass regulator valve (N75)
Change over valve (N239)
EGR vacuum regulator valve (N18)
Mass air flow sensor (G70)
- Fuse 43
Clutch vacuum vent valve (if equipped)
Brake vacuum vent valve
Relays for preheating coolant (if equipped)
Crankcase ventilation heating element

The ECM supplies power (and sometime ground as well) for:
Fuel cutoff valve
Cruise control switch
Manifold (intake) air pressure/Intake air temperature sensor
Needle lift sensor
Engine speed sensor
Engine coolant sensor
Closed throttle position switch (part of "go" pedal)
Kickdown switch (part of "go" pedal)
Throttle position switch (part of "go" pedal)
Fuel temperature sensor
Modulating piston displacement sensor

The ECM also communicates to the instrument cluster electronics and transmission control module (on automatics).

As a result of this, you can see why if the relay starts to cause power to flicker, or voltage drops, for all of these components, the results can be "unpredicatable" and none of them desireable.

thanks for the comprehensive reply.
Windows and roof still working!
