Hi all,
I have RS brushed chrome mirror covers for my car which I am attempting to fit. My question is how do get the mirrors to stay in the out position with the ignition off? I do not want to be faffing about with electrical connections on the car with the ignition on in case I blow a fuse or something worse! Its probably really simple but any advice would be appreciated as I do not want risk damaging anything on what is a brand new car.
Has anybody else on the forum tried this conversion on a FL A6. I've watched a few video's on youtube of people doing it on an A4 and a Q3 and it looks quite straight forward once you get the glass out.
Car is 2016 s-line BiTDI
cheers

Have you checked the mmi setting? Im pretty sure there is a setting to fold mirrors on lock/unlock. I dont think facelift mirrors are different at all, even so will be same principal. Aim to get the upper cover off by teasing the clips away from inside and from the front edge where it meets the lower black unpainted cover.

Thanks Morski. Found it under central locking settings. Just got the mirror glass off and the rain came on. Don't you just love our weather!

So took the wing mirror to bits but could not get the new cover to fit quite right where it mounts on the body work. It felt as though one of the internal mouldings was not lining up quite right. Its a pity because everything else lined up perfectly and they looked really smart. Finally gave up and put the old one back on. I should of course have compared the two covers on the inside to see what the problem was but forgot to do that. At least I'm an expert in A6 C7 wing mirror removal now! I will consult the help of a friend who works in a car body shop and have another go later. I will post some pictures if and when I get them fitted.

A picture would have definitely helped. Could you have adapted the offending tab so that the cover would fit?

Yes, I will defo have another go at this job. My plan is to remove the original mirror cover again and compare it to the new one . If I can remove any offending or re-size any oversize tabs, I am sure they will fit ( this is what I should have done in the first place!)

Did you ever do this please?

I'm interested in options to change the mirror casings as I feel it will help break up the black, black, black of my ordered car!

Hi,
yes, they are fitted and look fab. I did exactly what I said in earlier post. I had to slightly trim one of the locater tabs on the casing on the drivers side with a file and then managed to persuade it on. The passenger side was a great fit and was fitted in about 10 minutes. Once you have the confidence to take the mirror apart, its actually quite a simple job. The hardest bit is getting the old casing off - you have to lever it off with a lot of pushing and twisting but it will go. I bought myself a cheap set of plastic trim removal tools from ebay to get the mirror glass off too. There are several good vids on you tube which i would advise you to study closely before attempting this.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi Morski,
i will post pictures once i figure out how to reduce the file size. Can't even get them posted using the url from photo bucket. Happy to get advice from any techies out there?

It depends what phone/camera you’re using, but it should have some way to reduce the image quality and therefore file size.

Also try tinypic.com (http://tinypic.com/) as I doubt they are over 100mb ;)

Put these ones in because the lighting is better.

Never doubted you for a second! Looking schweet. The alu/chrome of the mirror defo helps with tyeing the other pieces of alu/chrome around the car together.
Nice job

Cheers Morski,
Last thing on the list is the RS6 grill which I believe you have already done. I've always lusted after an RS6, but i am aware of how expensive it would be to run - so this is my attempt to create the poor man's RS6
I'm not really into tuning the car, its plenty fast as it is, though I had a demo in an RS6 and could not believe how quick it was - the BiTDI is rapid, but the RS6 just took it to a new level - and the sound was amazing - made my Kufatec sound quite weedy!

your car looks lovely, just ordered an S-line avant ultra in Daytona Grey, got to wait until end September when my current car goes back.

What size wheels are those on yours 18" or 19" ?

Cheers - you will love your car when you get it. By the way - the 20'' wheels give a firm ride but unless the road is really rough, they are fine.

Thanks for the photos - car looks fantastic!

I'm thinking that I may go down the "wrap" route - been quoted c.£100 to do them.
