The battery on my A3 2.0 Fsi Sport went flat due to it not being used for a while. After getting it started today, the Esp light stayed on. I've driven it and it stayed on. I've checked the fault codes and there was three from memory: Brake pressure sensor, steering angle and lateral accelerometer iirc.

How do I get the Esp light to go off? It was fine before the battery went flat.

Anyone?

I've had the battery off today to reset everything. Drove it for 10-15 minutes and the Esp light is still on.

If it can only be reset with Vag-com or VCDS, what version can I buy that will definitely sort it?

When you checked the codes, did you clear them, or are they refusing to clear.
If they cleared, what codes cam back on next test?
Your answer may help some of the experts to take you further
A query to Gendan re. vcds equipment will get you informed of best option, probably approx. 300 pounds.

Tried clearing the codes with a Vgate scan tool but the ESP light remains on so I'm guessing it's not clearing.

I don't want to pay £300 for a tool just to try and clear this problem. Do any of the VCDS/Vag-com tools on eBay allow the ESP light to be reset?

Normally if the battery in flat the light comes on and stays on, but you change the battery and once you take it around the block it goes out within seconds.

A vcds won't solve the problem because it may still reoccur, there must be a fault somewhere that needs looking into.

Do another scan and post the codes on here, but from what you say you had "from memory" something seems to be at fault.

But I've searched on here and read that it's common when the battery goes flat for these codes to come up and the ESP light to stay on.

Apparently the ecu loses the basic settings and needs recoding?

You could be right if u have done your research,
I'm only talking on my own personal experiences.

It may be worth posting the actual codes on here anyhow so ppl can relate to them more to help you out.

The codes were:

00810 Sensor 1/2 for brake pressure. No or incorrect basic

00778 Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
No or incorrect basic

01423 Lateral Acceleration Sensor (G200)
No or incorrect basic

None of this was present until the battery went flat and it was started from a jump pack.

Don't mean to sound patronising but, how did You connect the jumper?

Positive to negative or negative to positive?

Positive first then negative.

Perhaps your right, have you rang a vw dealer tech for advise?, my local dealer tech is quite helpful and helps me out where he can.

Vcds lite with an upgrade purchase may help if you call vag com they may help you out also.

No, haven't spoken to anyone else yet. Thought I'd ask here first.

Vcds lite is free to download but I did think it will not do modules/canbus so an upgrade will more than likely be needed.

Also try posting your engine code on here, as this may only be common on your year engine and others may know a little more.

If I remember correctly, vcds lite won't work on this year of car.
The fault codes clearly say that they have lost their basic settings so you must be right with your research. This is backed up by looking up your fault codes here: Category:Fault Codes - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Fault_Codes&pagefrom=01276#mw-pages) which says that it needs adapting to get the basic settings again.
If you don't want to take it to an independent specialist garage (who should have vcds or similar) then you could look at the vcds forum map to see if there is a forum member near to you who can help.

When the battery gets very low, I believe that these cars go into deep sleep to keep this stuff going, so the battery must have got really low.

I know people don't like cheap eBay versions of VCDS on here but a mate gave me a copy he didn't need and it worked a treat. No more ESP light on.

Did it just clear the fault codes.or had you to do any resetting e.t.c
Its good that you got sorted.

I had to re-enter the basic settings for the steering, brakes etc .

Took a little while working out how to use the software but searching Google on how to do it brings up quite a bit of info.

The car has to re set all of its parameters. When you reconnect the battery, drive in a straight line and then full lock left and full lock right and that syncs the cars limit. Mine went and luckily I knew a guy at Southampton Audi and he showed me the fault codes his diagnostics picked up and it was things like steering position sensor, brake position sensor and some other sensors to do with suspension! He drove it straight, full lock either way and sorted!

Driving mine didn't sort it mate ! Only way to sort it is using VCDS to reprogram the basic settings.

Hi I have the same problem with my mk5 golf, how do I find out the codes needed?

Had esp come on after a lower control arm front right worked itself loose, cranked it back up. Took it to a independent garage to straighten the steering wheel and adjust the alignment. Drove like **** on the way home. Weird noises in the steering column esp light flickering(wasn’t doing this before was just solid) felt like there was a misfire or boost issue (intermittent lack of power). Went back to car 10 mins later drove it, no light but would still present after pressing the button. No power issues. Runs a champ now. The ecu must have needed a chance to catch up I guess.
