Hey folks,

First time I have posted here, but I had great success on these forums before during a painful affair with a Renault Trafic.. Any help would be gratefully received.

I have a 2009 2.0TDI 140 Sport Passat with 100,000 miles
It has been reliable for the last year with only a sticking handbrake, until this weekend.

So, I was on my way to the outer Hebrides for work and just passing Edinburgh the coil light started flashing with an "engine fault" go to garage message. A bit of panic ensued, especially when the yellow engine warning light flashed up too, so I dropped into a local VAG specialist in Perth who popped it on the machine and said the faulty code corresponded to the throttle body and pedal, and as I still had full power it was likely a sensor error, he cleared it and told me I was safe to continue my work trip. I drove 1000 miles ish over the last 3 days and all seemed ok, aside from the blinking light. As soon as I was going to look into it another problem occurred, despite a 4-hour motorway run at 2000RPM this morning I have woke to find the DPF light on and 'follow instructions' flashing. Unfortunately, as the engine light was already lit I cannot tell if it's just the DPF light or both?

So, I have tried some spirited 2500-3000 RPM driving for about 40 mins in the hope that it would regenerate the DPF, but the light is still lit. I know that it is linked to the EGR and there is a lot of sooty buildup round the valve, see the picture, could all this be linked?

I am not a mechanic but am strong willed and handy with a hex wrench, what would the diagnosers out there do? I have ordered a fault reader, but it will not be here till next week. I would like to have a crack at removing the EGR and cleaning it but cannot find any guides for the 2.0TDi engine...

The mechanics description of throttle body could refer to the anti shudder and throttle flap which is motor actuated and below the egr on your photo. Can't be sure without knowing the fault code though. If this flap starts playing up it messes up the egr ratio which could have logged the fault code and warnings. This flap failed on my 1.9 pd tdi. If it is the egr valve that is at fault I'm pretty sure a new valve needs 'adaptation' to the car using vcds or some other high level diagnostic tool. Your fault code reader will not be able to do that. The soot around the egr looks more like oil and dirt baked on from the dipstick.
