Hi All,

I currently drive a 2012 BMW 320D sport but I have finally decided to buy an Audi :D. I’ve settled on buying an A6 but can’t make up my mind so would love some opinions on the following two cars.

First up is a 2013 A6 3.0 SE (http://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=1412686&r=s.php%3Fm%5B%5D%3D7%26m%5B%5D%3D7%26m%5B%5D%3D10 %26m%5B%5D%3D10%26o%5B%5D%3D1244%26o%5B%5D%3D45%26 o%5B%5D%3D86%26o%5B%5D%3D87%26nn%3D22%26yn%3D2013% 26g%3D0) Multitronic with 29000 Miles

Second up is a 2013 A6 3.0 Quattro (http://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=1430954&r=s.php%3Fm%5B%5D%3D7%26m%5B%5D%3D7%26m%5B%5D%3D10 %26m%5B%5D%3D10%26o%5B%5D%3D1244%26o%5B%5D%3D45%26 o%5B%5D%3D86%26o%5B%5D%3D87%26nn%3D22%26yn%3D2013% 26g%3D0) S-Tronic S-Line with 108000 Miles

I can get either for about the same cost, should I go for the SE with less miles or go for the Quattro “which I prefer” but with a lot more miles on the clock.

Despite the high miles on the Quattro it has mostly done motorway driving with one owner & full Audi service history, comes with 12 month warranty, brand new gearbox, tyers, brake discs & pads etc. The SE also has a full Audi service history with the same warranty.

If you had the choice what would you go for all things considered?

Thanks,

What kind of money are we talking about here? Seems these two cars are from opposite spectrums in terms of mileage for similar bucks... Quattro rules for me with two young girls and my peace of mind when my wife does a lot of the ferrying them around etc. The quotes you have is the key...

We have a fwd Ultra and the drive train is the worst thing about the car. Love the rest of it hence have ordered a BITDI for the best engine and Quattro and the black edition, mainly for he BOSE sounds as the std one isn't upto much

I personally would take the 12 month warranty 3.0 Quattro. You don't say if the warranty is Audi or third party...
If it's Audi, then it should cover alot of the equipment, Third party will not.

Still 108k is not alot for the 3.0 V6 , it's a good block, S-Tronic box is very good (VW DSG style), Sline trim is a little bit special which you should enjoy.

At the end of the day see which suits you, what extras they have and how they feel.....
See if you can get a quote for third party warranty per year after the one supplied runs out and see how much? (£500/year area).

The high mileage is the only point to cover with warranty so you can have peace of mind.

Both retailing for about 26000, same cost due to the mileage. Would much prefer the Quattro but the Milage is a concern. Not a huge amount available in Ireland.

£26k ? I'd expect they are 1-2 years old only ... for that money?

Sorry then my answer is neither....

First one is not Quattro and as I say they drive train is awful.

2nd the S-line way too high mileage but you pay what you get.

Have you considered leasing?? Amazing cheap deals out there.

and as a Brucey bonus if you can get an upgraded sound option as the std set up are junk.

It’s an Audi warranty noscream. The car was traded back to the same garage which it was sold from.

Oh 26k Euros? Sorry I'm based in UK and the market is soo different here. I'm Irish so I feel your pain... Small market and Massively overpriced due to VRT etc.
For what it's worth I've bought all my and my wife's cars (barring the new BiTDi on order) on Pistonheads and brought them back into Ireland. We've always made out like bank robbers... So my tuppence is to keep searching and bring one in yourself... It's always worked for me and there's a huge market over here to find the right car/ deal

Would love that one, but I would have to pay VRT to bring it to the south of Ireland. It would cost me an extra 9500.

No 26000 UK Money, converted from XE.com. I would go to the UK but I still have to sell mine and a trade-in is my best option. I'm getting 20000euro on the BMW.

You'll surely sell privately for more than a trade in tho? Carzone.ie is worth a shot. It's worked for me...

With VRT at the moment its not really worth it. I have gone that route before and saved money, but I need to change soon and the saving at the moment is not huge.

So anyway despite the milage the Quattro would be the better choice for most?

L3nnox
25-02-2016, 08:18 AM
I guess it depends on:
- your driving style: do you like to push it
- where you live: is traction critical, country lanes, snow?
- how the car will be used: towing, grass car parks

If you need traction, then Quattro all the way, if you just cruise buy the lower mileage car.

love these quotes - Quattro means nothing if your wife cannot drive the car proper (which I am not saying is the case)

In the UK 95% there is no need for Quatrro and with winter tryes the FWD would be as capable as a quattro with non winter tyres

I see the benefits of Quattro but not for the reasosns you state :aargh4:

Back in the day when I had the time and money I built a time attack Integra DC5 TypeR & had it out on the track as often as I could. So I think answers your first question. :)
Really what I'm asking is, is a high mileage A6 Quattro worth it, from what I have read on this forum I get the impression if an A6 is well maintained mileage doesn’t seem to be much of an issue.

I agree with whitter. In many countries Quattro is unnecessary. Before moving to Switzerland I had an A4 Allroad in Northern France. The only time I needed Quattro was during heavy snowfall in Winter 2011 and it was useless due to running 18" summer tyres. Winter tyres on FWD will beat summer tyres on a Quattro any day. I'm now driving Q and winter tyres and it's unbeatable in the mountains on a snowy day like today. If I moved back to an urban area in the UK I wouldn't hesitate to buy a non-Quattro Audi.

Not sure what "drive the car proper" relating to quattro means. It's permanent 4 wheel drive which works. In wet weather it is far better not only in snowy conditions.

In the past 11 years I've had 3 non-Quattros and 2 Quattros. Traction (or lack of ) was never an issue with any of them unless conditions were freezing, and then the tyres seem to make the biggest difference.

I think a lot of people are assuming that he wants Quattro for traction reasons on snow/ice. For me, I bought it for the confidence it gives while driving in a spirited fashion on dry or wet roads. The Audi fwd platforms are awful in my experience for quick road driving. Although I do like that there is that added benefit that if there's a heavy snow fall while I'm at work I can still get home fairly easily

You must drive much slower than me then. Both our FWD audis have been skittish at junctions and roundabouts with traction control cutting in when it is damp or wet. Tyres are always good. None of the quattros suffer from this. In my wife's A4, it is so pronounced that she now wants quattro on her next one.

I have a fwd C7, I have two mates with fwd C6s and the only complaint we have is traction. My wife even complains about it.

Maybe with the heavier 3.0 over the front wheels will help. But in my honest online personal opinion if Audi didn't do Quatrro or rwd I would definitely be buying a BWM again.. On a number of occasions I have been left high and dry wheel spinning at busy roundabouts or failing to get up on ramps. I have lost confidence in the cars abilities. I lease my cars so I'm not doing winter tyres (have done on my 535d and X5 and they were amazing: Dunlop 3Ds).

We are all different but being an ex-modified Type R driver like yourself, I'm happy to put more wheels to work.

But if the kids are a priority get a Q7.

Between my 2 3.0 TDI Quattros I had a 2011 non-Q A4 2.0 TDI Avant. Compared to the Allroad it felt light and more nimble but never skittish, and I didn't hold back with it. The Qs feel heavier and I suppose safer but I had absolute confidence in the other A4

I would say buy the car that suits your needs, not just in the mileage.
I bought a 120k miles A4 (FWD), all Audi servicing and motorway rep miles, it has been flawless for 13k miles/yr.
But if I was going to do 20+k/yr, and all on motorways I would be buying the lower mileage more frugal FWD car for sure.

Picking up my A6 3.0 FWD tomorrow.
The 2.0 177ps was not enough in that car, same hp as my A4 and barely enough in that.
The 245ps on tap in the 3.0 Quattro felt the same as 215ps in the FWD car on my dry test drive.
I'm sure when pushing hard and on less than perfect surfaces the quatro would come into its own.
