My 1 day old to me (59 plate) AVANT 2.0 TFSI S Line S Tronic Quattro gearbox died within 24 hrs of ownership :aargh4:

I really liked the car and all its gizmo's etc, I would like another one of these but I don't need the anxiety of a potential gearbox meltdown because of a know fault etc ?

I was asked in my previous thread if I had researched the car and gearbox, obviously I didn't do enough.

What am I looking for or looking to avoid in my purchase (re: gearbox) ?

Thanks in advance

Any car may fail.

LoL

Stating the obvious there me thinks.

Clearly the S Tronic is a known bad box.

Are they all bad, even just the normal auto box's

Maybe Audi's are not the cars they used to be, its a sad day when I have to acknowledge there utter rubbish

I'm not sure there are different auto boxes - people just call them different things. S-tronic, DSG - most people are referring to the same thing.

Manuals are less error prone.

I doubt you know the previous history of how the car was used or serviced, but having had Audi's since 1992, Ive been lucky enough not to have a one fail/ breakdown on me. Partly i guess down to being well looked after, and knowing what can fail if its mistreated.
It seems you were unlucky and thats maybe why it was up for sale?

Agreed, I believe the dealer knew and was just chancing it.
It does have FASH and I'm going to phone the dealerships tomorrow to make sure what I see in the book is what has actually been done.
(2 auto-box services are in there)

I want to buy another but am concerned about another gearbox problem like this,
are the:
multitronic
tip tronic
automatic
any less prone to suicide than the S Tronic ?

Or have I just been unlucky ?

They are all the same box I think. Just people call them different names.

Audi A4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_A4)

I don't think they are all the same box. Different speeds.

I stand corrected. I think the S-tronic box is the most common which is why I thought they were all the same. I have never heard of a B8 with an 8 speed box.

Every gearbox won't have a problem. Bear in mind the people that don't have issues don't really speak up. You hear the negative issues more than the positive.

Yes I know, Ive recently got out of another notorious motor that has gearbox issues. Thing is though I don't want to be spending circa £13K and then needing to have £8K spare for a gearbox meltdown, bit of anti climax.

What mileage was on your S4 before the box had a fit ? Was it an expensive fix for the mechatronic fix ?

I went to the gearbox specialist place this morning, had a good discussion with them over auto box's.

They were very helpful and basically said that Audi and VW keep them in business.

They were inundated with DSG boxes from Audi's and Skoda's and are very very familiar with replacing the mechatronic on DSG box's.

They also mentioned to be fair that all modern boxes are essentially controlled electronically and there lie the problem.

Buyer beware .................. I'm getting a manual :)

My car was approx 40k (I only bought it with 39k on the clock) miles when the box started playing up. The fix was the repair kit from Audi fitted by a very good local specialist I found. Was covered under warranty which paid out around £1200 I think.

I wonder if a change in driving style ( like a new owner) may cause these box issues.
