Hi Guys. I'm new to this, just bought my first vw so I'm sure I'll be a frequent visitor.
I would just like to find out if my car might be fitted with the original failure prone balancer shaft/oil pump?
I've read some horror stories and hope my mind can be put at ease!
My car is a 2006 2.0 tdi BKP engine with 200k miles.
Chassis number is wvwzzz3cz6p1588**
Thanks in advance and I hope someone can assist me with this!
Cheers!

Don't think there's a definitative answer from VIN. VAG wont say exactly when they started to fit the units that actually work properly.
2.0L PD has twin Lanchester balancing shafts which contra-rotate at 2x crank speed. The first engines used a chain drive, which was a complete disaster. And the later engines a gear drive. All 2.0L PDs got the geared drive toward the end of 2005. In short, you'll more than likely have the shaft rounding problem and need to get it sorted with KMB replacement parts.
Good product pix and part numbers on their website:
All Products - KMB Parts Direct (http://www.kmbpartsdirect.co.uk/products.html)
KMB have several kits available dependent on what engine you have:
Oil Pumps - KMB Parts Direct (http://www.kmbpartsdirect.co.uk/oil_pumps.html)
Not a Derv head here but there's many in here that are much more knowledgeable on this. Some have done the mod themselves

Yes you will have the inferior 77mm hex key drive with multiple engineering faults.
Modified remanufactured balancer shaft and new harder longer 100mm hex key sorts .

Hi Guys, thanks for the quick response. Well at least I don't have the worst of the worst but I guess if I did, at 200k it would have given in by now!
In relation to changing the drive,
Firstly is it an expensive job? and Secondly is it something I could perform myself without taking it in to the garage?
I'm mechanically minded and do pretty much all service/repairs on my cars!
Thanks again lads

It's a pain for a DIYer and requires specific alignment tools -- it's not a Plug n' Pray job
Do you have a pit or access to a lift?
But some in here have done it themselves -- kudos to them!
PM me an email address for a compendium .doc I put together with URLs etc
Remind me what it's for?

OK, well I don't have a lift myself. I have access to one though, if it's too much hassle for me seeing I nerd alignment tools I coukd get a local mechanic I know to do it maybe!
I can't seem to send you a pm, it says I must have 15 posts first and I just joined! Perhaps you could pm me and I could reply??

At least it is not chain drive, all you need to do is bolt on the upgraded balancer.

Only ask for a PM to avoid spam bots that look for email addresses
Mine's richard<no space>t<no space>@<no space>ntl<no space>world<no space>.<no space>com
Send me a blank and I can reply to that

You need to let me have an email address to send it to
Or send me a blank email to the address previously posted (without the <no space> of course) and I can reply to that

It's actually not that bad a job to do. If you get a KMB modified replacement shaft with the new 100mm drive key, new circlip to retain the key in the pump drive hole, new oil pickup pipe o ring seal, new balancer unit fixing bolts, new crank pulley bolts (recommended but not essential imo) sump gasket sealant and timing locking tool set that includes the balance shaft alignment plate then you're good to go. Torque wrench(es) also required along with a decent tool set.
DIY no lift - Required skills
1. Decent mechanical knowledge or level of competence
2. Ability to apply sump sealant correctly
3. Methodical approach
4. Second person to hold balancer unit whilst removing or re-installing or method of lowering and lifting balancer unit whilst you are undoing / locating and tightening the retaining bolts.
For its size the unit is f*****g heavy and most will not be able to offer the unit back up with the alignment plate in place to ensure a correct marriage of the gearing whilst sticking a bolt or two in to hold it unaided. I found this out the hard way as I did manage it after dropping it on my arm twice whilst trying this. Also when removing the balancer unit you don't want it to drop out after you have undone the last bolt when you then realise it weighs far more than you imagined! If you have a transmission cradle attachment and a 3 ton high reach jack it's easy. Most 2 ton jacks won't reach high enough after you've raised the car enough to get under and it's even pushing the limits of a 3 ton. The extra height you gain with a transmission cradle attachment is very useful. If you have a lift it is physically easier but a long way for the unit to fall if you drop it! The better the range of tools and garage equipment you have the easier the job becomes.
PS I may be wrong but I've not heard of a B6 from 2006 reaching 200K with an original intact key and shaft. Maybe the OP can tell us how long they have had the car? Perhaps it has already been replaced but if with original unmodified parts maybe it's time to do it again.
