Hot engine.

I feel my car has been running hot the last few weeks. The temp gauge doesn't reflect it. But after driving a 40 min country trip the car outside smells a bit like rubber and the bonnet is very toasty. My husband says that I am paranoid but deep down I know she feels hotter than normal and have never smelt the rubber smell. Any thoughts or checks I can do to ease my mind. Thanks heaps [emoji3]
