Hi,

I have to make a decision between an A3 (8V) 1.8 TFSI Quattro (S-Tronic) and an A4 2.0 TFSI (B8 - 2012) Quattro (manual). One of the final considerations which will swing it is MPG. I know the A4 should slightly more thirsty, but how much? I've posted this in both A3 and A4 forums for obvious reasons, hope that's OK.

If you have either of these cars, please could you give me some kind of idea? Because these things are so dependent on conditions and driving style, it would really be helpful if you could tell me the types of roads you're on, any motorway mpg, etc. and what you get when driven moderately, or carefully (I'm assuming the mpg on either will be crap if driven in 'spirited' fashion :D).

If anyone can directly compare the two in real driving with the same driver/roads, that would of course be flipping amazing!

Cheers,

James

You only posted this thread at a little before 8PM on a weekday last night, it's a little after 8AM in the morning the day after - give it time, if anybody can help they will ;)

Yeah, I know, sorry! Just I have to make a decision on these cars today or one will likely go. Basically if I can get reasonably good mph from the A4 when driven moderately (i.e. when I'm not having fun) then that would probably be my choice.

I've tried researching, but doesn't seem to be a lot of data on the petrol version of this, and particularly the post-2100 facelift Quattro. A lot of forum replies I've found relate to the 2008-11 engine which was apparently quite a bit more thirsty.

if it's MPG you're worried about I'm afraid none of the cars is for you :)

You will probably have more fun with the A3 :naughty:

Not sure how much help this is given I have a totally different engine combo...
But, I get about 36-42 MPG in my 2012 A4 that has the improved 1.8TFSI (170PS) depending on road - 40-42 on the motorway about 36 elsewhere. Spirited B road driving will drive that into the low 30s and high 20s

So I'd expect the 2.0TFSI Quattro to get quite a bit less than that 30-35 would be realistic I'm guessing.

Thanks guys.

Yeah I know it's a bit of a how long is a piece of string question!

I'm not expecting either of these to be super-frugal - I've run A80 B4 Quattros back in the day, and currently have a heavily modded S2 running 360bhp. However, this is for a daily drive so I do have to at least consider mpg.

Where I live it's mainly country B roads with hills, but I do the odd long motorway journey, including a yearly run down to the South of France camping. In my most recent references I'd tend to get (according to DIS) 2000 Golf IV GTI 1.8T 32mpg B-roads, 36-40mpg motorway; Scirocco 1.4 TSI (160 bhp) 33mpg B-roads, 36-38mpg driven moderately at 70 mph motorway.

Anything near to both of those would be fine, any chance that's realistic?

Hm, just found this, which is missed before!

MPG For 2.0 TFSI Quattro - Page 2 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/69158-MPG-For-2-0-TFSI-Quattro/page2)

In fact those motorway figures seem surprisingly good, or am I missing something?

Hi, My 2.0 TFSI Quattri gets 32-34 mpg on a motorway run. Short journeys its down to 26

Thanks, that helps a lot. I've decided to go for the A3.

OK, A3 has fallen through so I'm back to the A4 - somehow I'm quite happy about that, maybe because I always had love affairs with my A80Qs...

Anyone know if there was actually a real-world difference between the pre and post 2012 models in mpg? Official figures claim about a 2mpg improvement across the band, and a slight lowering of emissions, but is this real or just improved emissions test 'massaging'?

Just to finish off this thread, having driven both, I found the A3 was considerably better on mpg (on a 20 minute test drive of the A4Q I failed to get more than 24mpg, despite bits of gently cruised motorway and not toooooo many foot to the floor moments ;).

I will say, though, that the A4Q was a far superior drive in every way, at least for me. Amazing machine.

Ive had mine for two years now, love it, but if i do a long run i average 34mpg on the DIS (roughly 350 mile range), im usually around 28-30 under normal conditions though. Its DSG and Quattro though so im not expecting stupendous figures :) Used to run Subaru Impreza Turbos so this is really good consumption compared to them, used to be lucky getting 200 miles out of a tank ! lol :)
