View Full Version : Data SIM & Bluetooth issue

hi all,

My A7 disconnects the phone on bluetooth when a data SIM is inserted into the MMI. As i learnt here earlier this was a bug in the earlier versions of the MMI (i have HN+_EU_AU_P0160), which should get resolved with an MMI software upgrade.

Car is with the dealer right now for some bits and reported my symptoms and have suggested perhaps an MMI upgrade as a solution.

Can i confirm that this is in fact an issue that should go away with an MMI upgrade, as am unsure if the dealer is aware of the symptom or the fix.

tried to explain on the phone, have now written down as below to explain:

1. Symptom: Whilst phone is connected on blue-tooth if i insert a data sim the phone on blue-tooth gets disconnected (alternatively if the data sim is already inserted the car will not connect a phone on blue-tooth). i have tried this with multiple phones as well, all of which connect on blue-tooth without any issue only if there's no data card.

2. why i say this cannot be 'as designed':

phone capability is unusable when a data sim is inserted, as the address-book is on the phone (not on the data sim).

When the car initially pairs with a phone it does load up the address-book from the phone to the car, but when the car disconnects the phone on blue-tooth when a data sim is inserted the car no longer shows that address-book. So the phone-book becomes inaccessible.

Have also advised them that i found the remedy via an AUDI forum

cheers
j

Yeah as above it should disappear after the update. If not there maybe an update that specifically sorts that issue but think it was part of the MMI software upgrade.

Hi all, new around here :)

Picked up my 2011 A7 the other week and have the same problem. Had a few emails with my local dealer (not where I bought the car) and they want to run diagnostics and charge for updates I think, I can't get a straight answer out of them at the moment. Is this something usually paid for? This is my first Audi so not dealt with the dealers before.

Also, I notice I can do the update myself. Is this recommended or something to avoid?

damtom85

Of course you will have to pay for update.

Also you can do it yourself but the risk is high and small mistake, will kill your MMI.

Desmondo

So I should pay for something that is effectively broken? It's crazy that you can't use a phone and internal SIM at the same time.

I don't mind a small fee but they're quoting me £60 for diagnostics and then no mention of cost for the actual update.
I'm currently choosing which of my local dealers to deal with so hoping one will be a little more friendly but I'm not holding my breath.

To be honest, before you bought your car, you could research for faults or issues on forum like this. Then ask dealer who was selling to you to do update of software and map in price of car otherwise you will not buy. Small blackmail but it works all the time. If you buy AUDI you have to be prepared for cost of servicing and diagnostics.

£60 is normal working hour at AUDI dealer so not bad.

It's a fair point and something I'll bear in mind in future. It's just that it's such a basic thing I guess I'd be expecting it to work. I'm all for paying for things, I just want a straight answer that they don't seem to be able to give me. Is it going to cost me £60 or £200? I've told them the issue and how to fix it, they just need to do it. I've done half the job for them ;)

Just ask them to do software update for MMI and nothing else - no diagnostics , you are the client and you are demanding this to be done in car. Update takes around 40 minutes up to 1 hour. It depends from which version you are updating

in my case i only learnt of this issue in here after i bought the car, but logically speaking it is indeed a defect, reasoning as in my original post.

car went back to the dealer for some bits already on plans, i added this to the list, i believe the dealer is upgrading the MMI for me, will know for sure and whether it fixed the issue when i get the car back and will report back.

so far my experience is - the car's had it's teething issues but their service has been great, including what they've given me to run around in - a brand new Q5 :o

Did this update solve your issue?
I just got a 2012 last friday and got a sim today to find out I have
this issue too and also found I have an old map with no new part of M74.
Details of MMI.....
Media Version:
HN+R_EU_AU_P0518
Nav. database version:
8R0060884AH ECE 5.13.8

Not sure how old this is but guessing 2012.

So doing my firmware update as we speak.
33mins so far i'm going from 518 to 770.
It's saying 12 updates for me.
Pretty simple so far.
Either start car or put it on a charger.
Press Car the Back just after it for a few secs takes you into engineering mode.
Pop the SD CARD into slot 1.
Press updateon bottom right soft key.
Scroll down to SD card slot 1 and press big button.
Select Standard.
Scroll to bottom and click Start Update.
It took just about an hour to do from 518 to 770.
Mmi reset a good few times during the process.
When finished it shows all the updates then just scroll to bottom
Then click cancel and it does a final reset.
Didn't fix my issue with the sim and phone until I just found this.

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/158127-Bluetooth-Phone-and-Dashboard-Data-SIM-Card

I will try this tomorrow and see what happens.
As i've done the update i will be putting the SD card on ebay unless
Anyboy would like to buy it.?

Not sure why but it won't let me update a picture to this as comes back with an error?

Anyway all is working as it should be :biglaugh:

I've got the car back with the MMI upgraded, finally had a chance to check this issue.

Happy to say, it's working perfectly[emoji106]

Now the car can have a data sim inserted for data services while it connects to a phone via BT for voice.

I probably wouldn't use google maps all the time, but.. [emoji39]

Shamus, I'm interested in your SD card, if it updates the way you access Audi connect? currently the only way is through the Nav screen, press the top right soft key (info), then it gives the audi connect option so press it again and you're in.

A way I've seen on cars older and newer than mine is press menu then in the ring of other options like media etc etc its a new option in there where i currently have a gap.

If yours is now showing the new way ill take it off your hands, how much are you after?

Sorry, probably wasn't clear. Basically my car screen look like this...

I am thinking and hoping a software update may make it look like this....

Yes Audi connect is top middle (12 o'clock position) between Car and Tone

Mitchy u won't get that as it is hardware dependent. Guy who works at dealer prepared special SD card for me with AUDI connect, to test if non Audi connect unit will get extra option on Ring after update. The answer is no, unfortunately.

Thanks all for the replies. Yes I've got Google Earth and Audi connect it's just a long winded way to get to it at the moment. Sounds like the software update will do the trick.

Is the SD card still up for grabs?

Just a quick update (and thanks to Shamus), the new software does indeed add the "new" audi connect symbol.

I like it and the mrs is very impressed (NOT). all done in 34 minutes which is pretty good considering the amount it had to do. It also doesn't appear to have lost any of my VCDS mods or the speed sign recognition either which is good.

Doesn't work on the wifes A5 but that may be due to older software?
Thanks again Shamus

SIM inserted now and data services active [emoji106]

Phone also connected via BT, but for audio player and directory only [emoji848]

Need to connect Handsfree as well but its disabled.

Or Is there anyway I can switch the telephone used to BT and not the inserted sim?

If you have green menu unlocked then enter it, go to diagnose - settings - tel_settings and enable it

I don't have the green menu, I'm after VCDS mods now.

Car needs to go back though - the service regime is not set right. Wondering whether I should let them do that first? If not they'd know I've played around... Not that it should matter to them.

I don't have the green menu, I'm after VCDS mods now.

What's the difference? Enable the green menu first (it's easy, please refer to the pinned tips&tricks topic) in the VCDS and after it simply select this option there. If you don't want the green menu later, than simply disable it with the VCDS later.

Sorry, I misunderstood your previous answer :(

Of course, you need VCDS to enable the green menu first. Just for fun, if you are after the VCDS modifications, are you sure this menu was not enabled for you? When I made my modifications, the professionals left the green menu on without a specific request.

Yes, car+menu, 6-7 sec is IMHO more then enough.

"And top rights soft key+control knob+menu to exit?"

To exit from the green menu, you don't need to restart the MMI, you can exit from it by pressing any function key (Tel/Nav/Media/Car...). Some changes requires a restart (Fe. enable NAD operation).

It sounds strange to me: Enable MMI hidden green menu (2G, 3G, 3G+) - mr-fix.info (http://mr-fix.info/mmi-hidden-green-menu-2g-3g/) because as far as I know it's not a car model, but an MMI version related thing. On my former MMI system [A6/2G] I had a "setup" button, and in that case I had to press the setup+car combination to start the green menu.
