Hi all, got a 2008 Golf Bluemotion bls.
About a year ago it started smoking white/blue smoke intermittently from start up, so sent it back to the dealership where I brought it and they said it was fine.
Carried on driving it and gradually the smoking got worse, it was using alot of oil and would smoke from start until fully warm.
So back to the dealership it went, they said the turbo was shot so put a new one on and cleaned the dpf, sent it back me and said it just needed driving to burn all the oil out the system.
So that's where I am now, I've done 1,000 miles of dual carriage way and motorway driving and it's still smoking form start up until warm, the car stinks of burnt oil and I've topped up with 2 litres of oil in that distance.
Also sometimes at idle it feels like the car is shaking from a misfire, and twice since the turbo change the car has not started on me, I turned the key and there was a thud from the starter but the car wouldn't turn over, a hour later and it was fine.
I know it needs taking to a garage but until I get the time and cash spare has anybody got any ideas what it could be?
Thanks.

It sounds very worrying, what is the oil consumption in litres per thousand miles? Piston problems are quite unusual with this engine but it is not unheard of.

Around the 2 litres mark

That's alot, new turbo so can't be that must be piston oil rings.

Well VW's maximum allowable consumption is 1 litre per 620 miles so something is definitely wrong.

Compression test check, will give a clue if the rings are fried
Are you down on power at all?
Does it feel sluggish?

Yeah rings is where I'd put my money, is it easier just to find a second hand engine or can the bottom end be rebuilt?

Yeah feel sluggish and down on power, but abit better when fully warmed up.

Just out of interest, what's the mileage?
I know it sounds bad, but I'd trade it in and let someone else worry about it.

Depends if yoi have the equitment to swap engines but a rebuild can be easier sometimes and less expensive
you don't need to take the head off to check for worn rings or bore scoring,
Just remove sump and crank/journal bearings etc and pull them from bottom to rebuild it.

Milage is 106,000. It wouldn't be me doing the work, that kinda thing is beyond me.

Yeh it will feel abit better on warm up because the rings/pistons have expanded within the bores giving it slightly more compression, but it should still notice that it's down in power

Oil control rings can wear, but compression rings can still be ok.

If a garage was to do the work 9× out of 10 they will advise on a new engine to save you labour to investigate the old engine just incase yours is beyond saving.

That would all depend on the pedigree,
If the is history solid on oil changes and it hasn't been red line hammered scoring and wearing the rings.

Service history is bang on, but I've only owned it for the last 12,000 miles so no idea how it was driven before.

at that mileage i would not think the rings would be worn, but, if its been driven too softly then the bores may be glazed so the rings cannot grip. you would only know that by taking the head off though and seeing whats what. to start with though i would want to know for a fact that the turbo has actually been replaced and that there is no other fault.
