View Full Version : Question Poor Colour Match

I bought a new Audi A6 S-Line Ultra in October 2015. I ordered it in Tornado Grey metallic. The rear bumper is a distinctly different shade to the main body of the car. I have taken it back to the dealer (Bristol Audi) twice and on both occasions have been fobbed of with "we can't get paint to match on plastic bumpers to the rest of the metalwork. That's the best it'll ever be" The front bumper isn't that good a match either. Anyone else had similar issue?
Thanks
Brian

Hi Brian,
I had the same on a Red Honda Civic Type R many years ago, Honda used a similar excuse 'we paint the bumpers separate to the car, the match will never be perfect sir'. I've never seen this before or since then - my current A6 is Daytona and the match is spot on. I am a little concerned with your problem as my new car due mid March is going to be Tornado..
I'd suggest taking it to an alternative dealer for their review or maybe even a paint specialist who might be able to read the exact colours off with a spectrophotometer.
Good luck!

It is true that it is somewhat hard to match exactly; but have you looked at other Tornado Grey cars? If they are not the same then they need to explain why. I guess it is possible that your car's bumpers were repainted before delivery.

As mentioned, I'd ask to see the same/similar car in the same colour and see how the match is on that/those.
It is true that bumper and body will have a slight shade difference, most cars do. It just depends on how stark a difference it is I suppose.
Any pictures - perhaps some of VWAF's members have similar colour cars and can put your mind at rest if it's as it should be.

I have a Tornado Grey car and I can't say I find it obvious that there is a mismatch. I'll have another more critical look later. I recall on my silver C5 that I got in 2003 that there was a major colour difference between the bumper and the body but that is the way paint technology was then. My Oyster Grey C6 and Silver C7 were much better. An easy way to check if the bumper has been resprayed is to check the paint thickness using a paint depth guage

easy if you've got a PTG ;)
I should have a chance to give my tornado grey BE Avant, MY 2015 a wash this weekend. Had it 6 months now, and never noticed any difference in colour. Only by eye, but I'm picky.

Trip to a friendly body shop or car detailer might help on that

That's neither easy nor free.
Not rubbishing your suggestion, just saying it's not free nor easy.

My understanding is they all use the same plastic for the bumpers and they come in all colours, so why are mine a different shade?
Im not getting into paint technology, but I wouldnt have it. They would need re painting.

I'm confused - are your bumpers a different colour to your paint?
You're not the OP so I just wanted to check.
Any pictures of yours?

I've had this on a couple of cars. It's most noticeable if you wear polarising lens in glasses or under the old "orange" streetlights.
It's because bumpers and cars are painted separately not as one as they were in the past thus shade variations can occur.
