Noticed car was noisy when I left engine on to clear frost.
sounded like a rattle from front of engine.

Car is 2.0 tdi 190 bhp ultra
registered March 2015, done
8,000 miles . It's in at dealer
please see response
" it could be either a pully or condenser fault but needs to eliminate either as Extended Warranty will only pay for the actual part that is at fault."

any thoughts ???? I'm concerned

If it was registered in March 2015, it's not on extended warranty. Audi has an obligation to fix it and give you a courtesy car whilst they find it if it's going to take time.

you are correct. It was registered April 2015. They have had the car since last Friday morning. They gave me a courtesy car so its no problem. The last car was a 2012 one with same reg, so maybe the lady got mixed up. Cheers

Not sure how the condenser could be noisy unless it was hanging loose or something, or how it took a couple of visits?

Not sure. I'm not a technical person, but here first response after car was in first time

"The vibration/rattle has gone since he removed and refitted the ribbed v belt/ aircon pulley. The noise has now gone with or without the aircon on. He has tested it several times a day.

Another response from garage when car was in first time
"
it could be either a pully or condenser fault but needs to eliminate either as Extended Warranty will only pay for the actual part that is at fault.

All 4 cylinder Audis are rattly. In fact all 4 cyl diesels are rattly, especially when cold.

well aware of what a 4 cylinder diesel sounds like ( hot or cold ) . Had quite a few of them since 2004.
Thought idea of forum was to share experiences of cars ( I must be mistaken ):
So far garage replaced
CONDENSOR
TENSIONER RIBBED BELT. Not had it back yet.
Enjoy your car

I get a very small rattle, like two small metal plates clapping against each other rapidly (sorry that's the best I can explain) I will upload a video later. It's coming from the driver side, and more profound towards the front driver side wheel. This is regardless of cold starts/days. Even after driving 25 miles and being idle it's still there. When I'm driving and it's in gear, it disappears. However, when it biting point and reversing up a slight incline you can hear it then as well. It can be intermittent, each time I've been into Audi (twice) it doesn't do it! So annoying. Anyone have any ideas?

My very fresh A6 Ultra with now nearly 5K kmtrs on the clock also makes an additional noise on cold idle coming from the front of the engine, drivers side. It's like a hollow popping noise but it does go one the engine is warmed up. A mate of mine also on here has the same with his 2015 A6 Ultra. I'm just going to wait till the first service and leave them the car in the evening so they can start it from cold and check for themselves. The rattle from the rear is now fixed after they dropped the tamk and fixed in place whatever was loose.

Haven't had this problem on my A6 C7, but had it on a Ford Focus before, it was the heat shielding around the exhaust hitting off the exhaust. The heat shielding is very thin metal, pushed it back from exhaust by hand and problem solved.

Happened to be out for a run with my local garage man yesterday and after we returned I started up the care for him to hear the noise I previously reported. He was very surprised at how noticeable it was and he agreed that it definitely should not be there. He contacted the Audi dealership this morning and they are to get back to him. It looks like a 2 hour trip to drop the car in for an inspection. I've taken a short video which I'm uploading so they can investigate that as well. I'll share the link on here once it's up.

My MY17 with only 4000 miles on the clock makes exactly this noise when it's cold too. I've got it booked in at the dealer for 2 weeks time but I'd love to know what diagnosis you get when yours goes in.

Just received a phone call from the workshop manager at the Audi Dealership. There is a notification (TPI he called it) with sound example on the Audi Technical Support for Dealers website which states that this sound is coming from the rotor in the vacuum pump which goes away when the coolant reaches roughly 60 degrees Celsius. Another way of 'killing the noise' after start up is to pump the brake pedal several times. Audi specifically mentions to not replace any components as it would have no effect. So basically they are saying it's a design related noise that is supposed to be there and is perfectly normal, nothing to worry about.

Chap down the road from me has a 17reg Passat with a 2.0tdi. It sounds like a bag of old spanners from cold, and even when warmed up. The wife's 1.9tdi sounds far more refined.
That's progress for you.

Lol, I stand clear from mine when starting from cold in a busy car park, when 'warm' however she sounds 'normal' again. Not sure if they all do it as I never noticed it with the courtesy car. Must have another listen to it in the morning...

Thanks Dutch Paddy,

That's really useful to know. Have you tried pumping the brake pedal and if so did it make a difference?

I'm hoping to have my car back tomorrow sometime and I will try the pumping of the brakes and will report back.

Well, fired the car up this morning and tried the pumping of the brake pedal and it kind of works. The initial louder popping noise dies away but is still noticeable. Only when the car gets up to temperature it is fully gone.

Hi, I did the same today too. Pumping the brake pedal sort of made it a tiny bit better but as you say the noise doesn't truly go until it warmed up.
