Rear drivers side door won't open

Hi,

I have my golf over a year now and I can't figure out how to get the door open. The door won't open from either the inside or outside. I'm after trying a few things I read online but it was no help. A mate suggested I cut into the inner panel to be able to get at the lock and manually open it with a screwdriver and then replace the lock but I don't know if this would work. Any help at all possible would be appreciated.

A Golf 5 is unique, there is nothing behind the trim panel but sheet steel so you would destroy the trim for nothing, to get to the door lock you have to remove the door skin and to do that, you have to open the door.....

This is a front door but the rear is the same.
