The handbrake on my wife's touran is very poor, i have trying oiling it up and adjusting the cable under the center console however its still not good enough. The rear discs and pads are almost new but bedded in. been like this for a while and now failed the mot. Is this a question of replacing the rear calipers?

Have you checked the other end of the cable? Caliper end? Iirc there's a "stub" cable between the main cable and caliper on each rear brake caliper. Don't hold me to this as I may be thinking of a Vauxhall Astra mk4 lol. 98% sure though. Have a look.

Good luck

Had to replace both my rear calipers on 54 plate touran a while back, they would have been about the same age yours are now.
Don't recall any 'stub' cable, mini, just a short curly pig tale pipe between the caliper and flex hose. Don't clamp the hoses if you change them yourself.
