When I broke the rule of 12 years of Mercedes ownership to buy a Jag X Type I knew I had dropped to a lesser vehicle and vowed that I'd keep it for a year then would go back to a Merc.

However I got a call from my pal Bob who had been asked to sell a 2008 Audi A6 2.7 TDI SE Avant which had only done 32,000 miles from new. he thought of me and Im very glad he did. It sounded alright but I hadn't frankly got a clue about Audis. I thought I knew VAG groups cars; I'd had a VW Passat years ago, the wife had a Polo, Id scared myself hacking a modified GTI round a simulated rally stage, had driven a mate's Toureg and nearly bought a Skoda Superb but oddly had never even sat in an Audi so Im very glad Ive discovered the marque now.

What an excellent thing it is. It is the smoothest 6 cylinder car ive driven, diesel or petrol. Though Im not usually a fan of front wheel drive I have to say the ride is at least as good as the old E class Mercedes I had and probably equal to an S class.

The low mileage is due to the previous owner being South African and only using the car when in the country for business or visiting relatives and was kept under cover when not in use.

The first thing Ive done is to update the MMI 2 software which immediately allowed the Bluetooth to work properly with later Android phones. Im now looking for a remap to unleash a few more bhp and am on the lookout for a AMI or similar so I can play mp3s from a USB drive.

I tried to get a VAG Com lead to unlock the hidden MMI menus etc but seem to have got the wrong thing so would like to borrow a proper one for an hour from anyone local in exchange for a couple of bottles of fine ale.
