View Full Version : Quick question about timing locking tools

I just received the below tools (Sealey VSE2358).

A couple of questions...

Crankshaft locking tool - round gear (Black knob)
The knob has a screw thread and it unwinds. Where or how is this secured when fitted to the crank pulley?

Crankshaft locking tool - oval gear (Silver knob)
The silver part is completely fixed in place, it does not move or unscrew, etc. Is this right?

General question
Both the locking tools have non threaded ends. I'm assuming this is correct?

Tensioner locking pin
The one in my kit has a flat end on it. Is this right?

1.

Crank tool fits into a small hole above the crank sprocket, the tool has an triangle arrow on it along with the crank sprocket these arrows will meet and line up together to confirm correct timing, the pin on the back of crank tool locates in hole above crank sprocket on engine block.

Depending on the engine is dependant on which crank tool is used as they have different timing marks.

2.
Locking pin locate in cylinder head hole when cam shaft is aligned to timing mark.

3.

Flat edge on tension tool is so the tool easily pushes into the hole of the tensioner.

What engine is it and code?

Remove glow pugs to relief compression, so when you turn crank you get a better feel.

Do you have a manual for your engine. You appear not to so you do not know all the torque settings I would not advise this. Regards Peter

A Haynes Passat manual for the same year has instructions and torque settings for the whole procedure, You know you're meant to unbolt the front panel and move it forward to gain access? If you're changing water pump too I'd recommend taking the panel right off (swing it out of way with ac lines still attached). It's barely any more work and makes access a breeze.

Agreed- and don't be surprised if your radiator is rotten and needs changing as well. I've done it twice on passats with the lock carrier fully off and in the service position, worth the bit extra work for full access to the belt and pump,

Yea if you never done think twice and read up, don't wonna damage your engine or not tighten your engine mounts correctly.

You only disturb the snub mount at the front of the engine on this procedure and it's easy to adjust so no need to worry about mounts
