Gents.

Would appreciate some real world thoughts on ownership, mpg, service costs etc.

I just need a reality check to see if I am being a tad too OTT in spoiling myself.

If sir has to ask about running costs for a V8 twin turbo with 500+bhp, well..................

If you can afford it, it is definitely worth it. Running costs are high. Insurance, obviously. Tyres are wearing rather rapidly early into ownership, but the novelty hasn't worn off yet. :firedevilWinter tyres are ludicrously expensive. Fuel consumption, don't bother looking. Servicing could well be the pleasant surprise. It'll be pricey but not exponentially so.

And you didn't even mention the BIG ONE. Depreciation. :bigeyes2::scared::yikes::AR15firin Best to ignore that too.

But only you know if you can afford it and want to spend the money on this, rather than other things that don't drop in value like a stone, such as property. If you don't have to choose between them it makes life much more relaxing. :beerchug:

I am not nieve to think ownership will be cheap or unaware of rock dropping depreciation, I think my time on this forum would point to me not being that green.

Just some views on ownership and rough running costs was what I requested. If I could not afford I would not be wasting precious time asking.

Thanks

I think it's legitimate to be interested in mpg. I expect to do 20K miles in mine this year so naturally I am interested in getting reasonable mpg. My best run (200 miles of motorway) was 30mpg, but that was in the height of summer when mpg seems to be at its optimum. Right now, I am seeing 26mpg on the same run and my overall average is 24.5mpg. Fuel consumption doesn't vary much on the motorway until you go over 90.

My insurance is £500 p.a. though my lowest quote was £250 (50 year old in surrey).

Depreciation - as EssexGonzo says - undoubtedly eclipses everything else but I can pretend that isn't happening (until I come to sell the car).

Every time I get in the car and start the engine (cue the big "woofle" from the sports exhaust) I think what a great package the RS6 is. Discounts are very good at the moment, too. Expect to see 15% off list (I got 10% but I put in my order on the first day the book was open for the FL; my wife said I was "busting my britches" to place the order, so I rather missed out there).

The PE version is only a few extra £££ and 600bhp is a superb pub talking point, but in reality the standard car is quite quick enough.

Here is my favourite YouTube vid - especially the leader board at 1:19 with the RS6 as the third fastest car in the auto Express Supercar shoot-out: Audi RS6 vs Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series - Drag Race Shoot-out - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iaug-oRhXcU)

Find out the running costs etc. Then go for an ex demo. Could be a big saving and help towards those running costs. But if you are financially sound forget what I just wrote

I think the previous poster provided views on exactly those things.

No intended inference of naivety on your part at all.

Just an insight into how I approach running costs on a near £100k car.

And depreciation eclipses all others by some margin. Which makes me personally not worry about servicing, mpg, insurance etc.

indeed and thank you wildbore very informed reply.

Regarding depreiation I would certainly be procuring through the PCH route, the sums stack regarding business.

Just to raise an option, a colleague of mine just bought a loaded 3 year old RS4 for just under £40k (build sheets was £70k+). A lot of car for the cash and I don't think he will lose much over the next few years....

But if you can afford an RS6 just DO IT!!

And do please drive it with some consistency. I pulled over for one (RS6) on the motorway yesterday knowing he should be past me before I drew up to the car in front. He then panicked and backed off at the sight of a parked Highways Agency patrol and then aggressively shut the door on me but pootled past when I tried to retake my position without baulking myself. Thanks a lot if you're reading this. Next time you can eat my grit...

That's just inconsiderate. Blocking in, whether deliberately or not, is one of my pet hates. At best it's just incompetence in not reading the road and at worst its petty, small-minded, insecurity.

Yeah. I reserve a headlight flash for those idiots that force you to brake when they pull out and you're doing sensible (under the police radar) speeds. It still amazes me how unaware some drivers are. I'm not perfect and occasionally make mistakes, but do drive sympathetically, at least hurrying past if I see someone's getting baulked through inattention. Don't wish to bring up length, but mine's got a towbar. ;) (something my RSs never did).

I have considered the RS6 myself and also the S6 but I think if you have any concerns about running costs then don't bother. I know you might not have "concerns" as such and it's a very legitimate set of questions to ask but it's a costly mistake.

I pondered over my C63 when I bought it and knew it would cost me in ownership, I never expected to be filling it up every 150 miles and going through a set of tyres in under 4k miles!!!

I'm now in an A6 BiTDi black edition with a great spec and I keep looking at S6/RS6 but then I sat in an S6 the other week and the fuel gauge had 2/8 bars on it, the range was 35 miles. In the diesel 2 bars is 150 miles...

Why don't you see if you can get one on an extended test drive?

The BiTDi is a very worthy alternative. I'm missing some performance, but I have more than enough for 95% of the time.

For my trips down to Hamble, I get a fuel needle that barely moves, rather than one that would go almost from full to empty.

I'm still thinking that I will get an RS for my next car, but I have no regrets about getting the BiTDi this time round.

Looked at mapping it or a good tuning box???

No, I won't be mapping it. I'm terrified of getting a TD1 flag on it.

Besides, I wonder if the gearbox could take much more.

If you want to continue the discussion on remapping bi tdis, can you please start a new thread?

This thread is about the costs involved of owning an RS6.
