View Full Version : Sloshing sound
Just noticed today that if I brake hard I get a sloshing sound like water or fluid is moving about.
Not noticed this in my last 2 a6s or any of my other cars. Is this normal?
Not sure if it's just an effect from the torrential rain fall that we have had over the last few days and it's stuck somewhere and not getting out but I've done about 100 miles today I thought it would have worked its way out if it's rainfall.

How much fuel do you have?

I've occasionally noticed this when parking in the garage - I think it might be something to do with the adblue level but can't remember if I hear it when I've just filled up or when it's getting empty...

A mate suffered a similar sloshing noise in his Toureg for two years...turned out to be a half empty bottle of water wedged under the driver's seat.

Check that floor mats are not damp - or any sign of excess condensation on windscreen.
Blocked drains etc. can cause leaks into cabin.

Also check the spare wheel well. My BMW 5 used to keep a lot of rain water in there. It was like a mobile water butt.

Had this on my A4....it was blocked drainage holes and water trapped in the doors...

Particularly prevalent where you park under trees that drop wet leaves down the windscreen wiper parking area... if they are not cleaned out and break down then they can get into drains.
Right, spent about half an hour trying to find this. Nothing in the spare wheel well. Tried shaking the doors and carpet not damp. It does sound like it's coming from rear passenger side.
I alway make an effort not parking under trees or bushes. Car is like 6 weeks old so doubt I have accumulated enough crap to block the drains.
Cars booked in for my winter wheels on Saturday so will get them to have a look.

I had this during a test drive with a audi master tech for rattles and pointed it out. He said it was most likely fuel so I ignored it. Like you, carpets etc are dry.
But having just read the replies here, I just had a google search and a thread similar to this comes up on ASN. Most responses are similar but one has said the following:
"So I figured where the water was retained, apparently when I opened the rear drivers side passenger door I started looking at the bottom of the door and see there are is some wetness. I then proceeded to slightly pull on the rubber molding on the door at the bottom and down comes over at least half a gallon or more of water pouring down. I recently had the rubber moldings changed on this door from Audi as they were tearing on the top of the door. Looks like they did not install it properly or something was missed."

""Well, I've done my tests on the A6 TDI and I actually found the sloshing noise wasn't because of Adblue or the gas tank. I was surprised by this and realized that I just did the 25K service and ... filled up my windshield washer fluid. So I ran it down quite a bit and the next day did my turn and heard the sloshing"
The door one is an interest one as this could explain the "rear passenger" side in your case. I'm sure mine feels more rear driver.
Will try and check my rear doors over lunchtime if it doesnt rain

Hey mate!
I recently purchased a brandnew a4 2.0 TDI Quattro, I have only made 1500 miles in it and the same sloshing sound drives me crazy! Have you found any solutions, or at least pinpointed the reason?
Cheers
Thought I replied to this thread before but must have forgot.
My problem was a blocked drain in the bulkhead. The problem wasn't something like leaves and crap blocking but a rubber grommet type thing was slightly out of place and wasn't letting the water out.
It was retaining water there and some of it got back in the cabin. To touch the carpet was dry but when the dealers lifted the carpet the foam sound proofing was a little damp so they replaced everything, the carpet, soundproofing and all the other foamy bits.
