hi
I have a 2005 2.0 tdi sport. I know that there are plenty of threads about gearbox issues but I haven't seen this one yet.
basically I'm struggling to select either 1st 2nd or reverse. not all the time but quite frequent. it ok when the engine is off and all other gears are fine too. ive been told by some that it could be clutch, dmfw or a bearing or a completely ****** box. anyone have any other suggestions?

Could be a selector issue. Engine number? Gearbox number? Typically. First and second are on one selector fork, could be a linkage issue or a worn bushing? Is reverse next to first on the gearstick by any chance? (Top right). Could be the linkage mechanism somewhere on the "left throw" side.

I imagine if DMF was that far gone you would hear it when idling with clutch not pressed.

By no means a gearbox expert so fellow forummers feel free to correct me if I'm off target. :) just want to help,

Mini

I don't have any noises either. its a 6 speed box with reverse next to 1st on the top right.........I had similar problems on a mk2 golf but that was good old days when cars were easy lol

I would suggest the linkage failing. Makes sense for first, second and reverse to play up as they are on "leg one" (left throw), third and fourth on "leg two" (middle) and fifth - sixth on "leg 3" (right throw)

When my Passat shifter started playing up I phoned vw parts dept and the posted me a drawing. :) may also be one in Haynes manual. Would show you where linkages are, what bushings/cables/adjusters there are. Could be a bushing gone or one the other end, something in your shifter itself? I'm sure more car oriented engineers on here may shed a bit more light but that's where ide be looking before going down gearbox/clutch route bud.

Good luck,
Mini
