Heater panel Lights Not Working!!!!???

Hi last week my lights on the Heater panel went on my mk4 golf
(non climate control)
so I carefully took apart the dash firstly the panel on the front of the controls, undone the 4 screws, took off the glove compartment took out the stereo, took off the panel under the steering, undone the 2 screws on each side and the one next to the OBD port
the thing would not budge with no luck couldn't get to the bulbs!
so I was wondering if any one knows how to or any tips

Do a search as I think this has been discussed before but I think you have to put the middle fan speed button on number 2 setting (or straight up) and then the knob will pull off. Either the panel comes off at this point or the bulb is replacable from that knob...
