Hello Guys!
I have a B7 Avant 2.0TDi and I did Clutch and DMF at 250,000Km. When they removed the box (HCF) they found the crank seal had started a leak. I presume age and wear from the worm DMF. It has now been back Twice for the leak. The gearbox has been out about 5 times. They even put in an Audi seal at an additional cost but now it leaks more than ever. I know on the last attempt they left out the crank timing ring. I am taking it to another VAG specialist. My poor heart. :( Is there any hope of getting this right?
Please tell me this can be resolved.
Thanks!
Dave. South Africa.

Yes. Apparently, it was sitting in the workshop.

so it can only be crank end float or lateral movment up /down, or a groove worn in the crank where the seal sits stopping it from sealing. but if its been looked at 5 times and the garage know what they are doing then its probaly not any of those reasons as they would check for them.

Thanks zollaf! If there is lateral movement, that would mean removing engine and crank? I guess that would also mean the same if the crank had a groove worn from the seal? I have heard that one only has one attempt at at installing the seal, otherwise you need a new one and start again?

If the crank is grooved you might be able to find a speedi sleeve to fit and recover the shaft.

I'm cheering up already, all is not lost. I should also point out that the two thief mechanics who both said they replaced the Flywheel did not do that. So it did about 50,000Km of a buggered DMF.

There is a detailed procedure to follow when installing the seal and sealing flange, using the vw fitting tool.maybe your previous guys didnt follow it. I'm doubtful if a sleeve would help as after having a look, the seal looks tight as it is. I've used them on bigger diesels with wider tolerance seals regarding shaft diameters.

uh oh, sounds bad. crasher is the boss when it comes to knowing about these seals, i know he posted a pic of the tool and one being fitted. get to 10 posts and throw him a pm, or if you are lucky he will see this thread and throw some ideas across.

So it looks like it was poor workmanship/****. (Which is better than having to dump the car as the repair costs would be astronomical) Waiting for new seal at arrive.
