Hello b5 drivers,

This question is more generic to any cars out there.

Wheels (the alloy / steel wheels): are they "life time" components or should they be replaced at some point in the car's life?

While I'm replacing lots of parts on my AFN (as expected, it's 16yo), I suddenly wondered about whether wheels ever need to be replaced. Other than for obvious reasons (i.e. deformation, accident, etc.), should the original wheels from factory day one be replaced during the car's life time, for example after 10+ years? Or, if they are in shape, should they last perfectly fine until its way to the car graveyard?

They are permanently exposed to the elements and abuse, wouldn't they diminish in their performance at some point?

Happy motoring!

Alloys are normally for the life of the vehicle, but as you say heavy damage such as potholes can render them scrap. Even if you look after them, there can be internal corrosion around the tyre beading. If you have tyres losing pressure, then there's a good chance this is the cause.

Replacing them is an expensive business. If you can afford to go for winter tyres, then opt for steel rims with winter tyres. The road holding in lower temperatures and snow is remarkable. You can use the opportunity with winter tyres fitted to get your existing alloys refurbished (remove tyres completely). Allow around £75+ per wheel, plus balancing and new valve, etc. Come spring, swap the whole lot over again.
