2006 Audi A6 2.0 TDI Auto performance problems and more

Hi guys. I've recently bought an 2006 Audi A6 TDI with supposedly 113k miles on the clock and FSH and didn't make it home before it gave me issues! I'm hoping someone could help me somewhat.

On the drive home on the motorway the car seems to not be pulling quite the way i would have expected to so i gave it a little throttle when the orange flashing glow plug light came on and the car lost more power. I switched the car off and back on again and regained some of the power but again, when i pressed down on the accelerator the light came back on and back into limp mode.

This time i pulled over on the hard shoulder and the car cut off. The fuel was on reserve showing 100 miles but the car refused to start back up again. Cue a 3 hour wait, dead battery and a ride home with the RAC. Before recovering back, the RAC did try to get it started but it would only tick over without starting. The fuel tank was now showing 0 miles and empty!

Cue yesterday and i put some more fuel into the vehicle and tried to start it but again had no luck. I managed to find someone with a VCDS locally who popped over and scanned it for me. A few error codes popped up but unsure whether this was due to a low battery or not. A lot of code clearing and turning over, it managed to come back to life. I drove it straight to a garage and left it there to be inspected the following morning.

Mechanic today has pointed to a DPF as the warning light came on. I collected the car and drove the car 100 miles with some Cataclean to regenerate and the DPF error disappeared. I didn't risk giving it any heavy throttle in case it cuts of again but still lacks power randomly and revs highly without actually moving any quicker. On top of this, the fuel gauge shows 550 miles with 20 odd litres and less than half a tank of fuel which seems oddly incorrect.

Unfortunately looks like I've been sold something which wasn't described at all but could do with some help with where to start in correcting this!

All of the faults indicate a duff battery or alternator. Can you share the type age and specs of the battery? It could be that the car had been sitting for some time prior to sale or they have fitted the wrong battery to get it off the forecourt. Slow charge the battery with an intelligent charger like a CTEK (could take up to 4 days if flat). If the Alternator then you'd be best to have your existing one refurbed at a local battery place.

To my knowledge a 2006 A6 shouldn't have a DPF, my 07 3.0 doesn't have one, one way to confirm is the data sticker by the spare should list '7GN' if it doesn't have one and 7GG if it does.

The power issues may be totally unrelated, am sure you are aware that the multitronic tranny must have a fluid change every 40k miles, so yours should have had 2 with the 3rd due quite soon. Advice on these forums is never to buy a multitronic car that' not had it done. If it has then the usual suspects are either a gunged up or faulty EGR or a blocked fuel filter

Also sounds as if your fuel tank needs to be recalibrated...does it have any history of anything fuel related being changed recently?

Unfonately although I have the service book fully stamped, there's very little in the way of receipts to confirm if anything fuel related has been changed. What is the calibration method? I've been lent the VCDS for a few days to try and diagnose.

I've driven the car over 100 miles in an attempt to regenerate which did put out the DPF light but still lumpy to drive with no power. It did give me a chance to charge the battery again so I've scanned it again today's. If still battery faults, I will slow charge with a smart charger and see if there's any change.

Mechanic has confirmed it has a DPF and the HPI even has DPF in the model for some reason! When I rev the engine pretty hard it came a slight swooshing shound which I'm led to believe is the turbo stuffing to breath because of the DPF.

In regards to the auto box, it's never thrown out any faults but i wouldn't be able to confirm any changes on it! At this late stage, I'm not sure how It would help. Any way or ruling out the auto box or confirming its the issue?
