intermittent wiper setting not working on vw golf mk 5

Hi - just purchased a golf mk 5 and the intermittent setting on the front wipers is not working - the other wiper functions work fine - any idea how to fix this without paying £50 for a diagnostic?

Often it is the column switch but you can only check this with a diagnostics system. When we service a PQ35 platform, we often see the intermittent wiper switch registered as being faulty.
