View Full Version : Should I sell for spares, or fix and sell at reduced price?

Hi,

Our 05 plate 3.2 Avant s-line appears to have a failed upper chain tensioner. We had them all done in 2011, so it's frustrating that one has gone again. I've already gone and purchased another car but I don't know what to do with the A6. Looking at ebay, a couple for repair / spares have gone for around £1700, but I'm wondering if having just the failed tensioner repaired for around £500 and going trying to sell it working is a better option? Not looking to sell through this post, just looking for advice. Lots of photos here if it helps pass judgement. :-)

I'm really not an expert but I would have thought that your car + £500 repair = far more than £2,200. Depends on mileage and other stuff so I could be wrong. How about other examples similar to yours in fully working condition?

I would also repair the car if you know you can get it done for £500. cheapest 3.2 Avant on auto trader is £5K, however with a high tax band it may be a slow seller.

Hi.

I would fix it.

£500, well worth the cost. Yes it's in the higher tax band but if your looking for this type of car that's down the tick list.

Also a selling point for the car and with a fresh MOT it should move easy.

It's a 2005 year model; the higher tax band came into force in March 2006.

Fix it up mate, makes sense to really. I know it's easy to get disheartenend by things like this and you just want to cut your losses, but if you do, it'll be on ebay for far more than it would have cost you to repair withing a few weeks.
