Is it possible to play movies on on the MMI system via an android phone using the AMI to micro USB lead ?

Are there different types of Audi AMI to micro USB leads ?

( I know it's possible to play movies with the AMI to Apple connector with the Red Grommet)

Possibly, but support is very limited. MMI can only see "mass storage" USB devices, such as USB sticks and certain phones which support that mode. My Galaxy S5 (and many other phones) use the MTP protocol, so the MMI won't recognise them. Even if your phone will connect, the MMI just sees it as files on a USB stick so will only play compatible video files. That means some avi files or mp4s with a static 25fps framerate.

Note that if your phone doesn't support mass storage mode and you have the tech pack, you may still be able to play back videos using the WLAN streaming option. However the restrictions on file types still apply. You could also plug a screen mirroring receiver into the AMI via the video input and an HDMI-composite video converter, which would allow you to stream anything from a compatible phone, but this requires several boxes to make it work (someone on the forum has done it).

This works differently to Apple devices with the magic "red" AMI lead, where the video is decoded on the phone, and sent to the MMI in a standard format so it can (I believe) play anything the phone can.

By far the easiest way to play movies in the car is to convert them to a suitable format (I use Mp4, standard-def, 25fps fixed framerate) and then put them on a USB stick or SD card.

+1 - this is much easier than I thought it would be using some free software called freemake video convertor

thanks for your input , interesting that it maybe possible to stream movies over the cars WLAN streaming option.
