Hi All,

Got a call from the Mrs during the day to say that there was a grinding noise from the passenger window and it wouldn't go up! Got home and have managed to get the window closed (good job in this weather!!). Have googled it and it would seem that it's the regulator that has failed?

Anybody else suffered this and if so, any tips on fixing it and how? There's a repair kit online but it's only 15 quid so I'm dubious as to how long it will last, if it works at all?

Thanks for any help,

Mike

Thankfully you're not the only one to lose a window cable(!)

Is it on ebay and sold by someone called Ozkam? If so, search the forum for my opinion on their products ;)

Do you have a link to the part?

A genuine replacement kit is ~£100 from TPS/Audi.

I had to replace my drivers door regulator recently and used a complete unit from this firm on ebay.
AUDI A4 S4 RS4 AVANT ESTATE FRONT LEFT SIDE WINDOW REGULATOR MECHANISM | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A4-S4-RS4-AVANT-ESTATE-FRONT-LEFT-SIDE-WINDOW-REGULATOR-MECHANISM-/151451949918?hash=item23433d5b5e)
They are local to me so I was able to pick it up from their warehouse. There are plenty off other sellers on ebay selling the same product for roughly the same price.

As you have to remove the door card and the top frame of the door it seemed easier to replace the whole item instead of doing a repair, and it came with a 2 year warranty.

Hi Mike.
I've done this job twice on b5 passats, once with the full replacement panel with regulator already fitted to the inner panel fromTPS at over a hundred quid and last time with an ebay kit for twenty quid. There is no doubt the genuine parts were far better quality, and if you have the money go for the full panel replacement. The ebay kit was for a car I'd just recently bought and already spent a bit on so funds were tighter. I had real doubts about the kit and the geezer I bought it from but it arrived, looked half decent and 12 months later it still works. I needed to drill off the old regulator slider bars and bolt on the new ones with the inner panel on the bench, also best to apply a bead of sikaflex to the gasket joint before you refit panel to the door. I left the door lock in place and remember it being fiddly to get the release cable to stay in place while fitting the card, other than that not too bad a job. I would reckon a garage would charge 1.5 hours labour.
Ps. If you go for a repair kit get one with the bars, pulleys etc, not just the cable and winder like the kit in your link.
