Hi

I thought I would share another repair experience with you all.

This time, the car was in for a 60k service at Specialist Vehicles here in Plymouth. When it came to dismantling the fuel filter housing to replace the filter, the mechanic discovered and then showed me the housing was full of a black diesely oil mixture and the filter was black and oozing with the stuff! The mechanic diagnosed a failing/ failed tandem pump and said it is a common problem with my type of engine and if it was ignored it will lead on to bigger problems and much more expensive repairs involving new injectors, glow plugs, fuel system clean out/ flushing etc etc.

I agreed to have the work done and after a quick call, I had the option of an OEM part (cheaper) or an original Audi/ Bosch pump at the cost of £290; I went with original as it came with a two year guarentee. The fuel lines were blown through, the filter housing cleaned out and two bottles of fuel treatment/ injector cleaner put into my fuel tank.

I must admit, whether it was the repair, the 60k service or a combo of both but the car seems to back to its old self again, a lot more responsive and quieter; I think I had forgotten just how it used to be. The guy also said my fuel ecomomy will be better also.

Out of interest and for a bit of reassurance i guess, I phoned the main dealer to confirm the price of the new pump and was quoted £326.66 inc VAT but after asking if there was any movement on that he came down to £294 but then he added that did not include a new gasket or securing bolts!

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Ur old pump was prob fine. It has a special felt gasket between head and pump causing oil and diesel to leak. Ur car wouldve run until it leaked too much to start up. If the tandem fails. Ur car wont run. It was more than likely just the gasket

Thanks for your feedback, although I'm not sure it was just the gasket at fault. From my understanding, the gasket is designed to prevent oil/ fuel leakage at the join between the head and the pump; I had no such leakage. I was told the problem was the pump itself and its internal diaphram failing, pumping engine oil into the fuel lines and clogging up the fuel delivery system.

The pump itself splits and has similar felt gasket and o ring setup seperating oil and fuel. It has no diagphram im aware of as its design is similar to an oil pump for high pressure

Thanks for that, that bit wasn't explained to me (probably 'cause they wanted to sell me a replacement pump). Do you know if there is a pump re-furbishment kit available?

If its pumping fuel and ur brakes are fine a simple gasket kit is available from the dealership.
