relays

Hello, I have just recently joined in hope of some advice. This may be long winded but I have been having intermittent issues with relays! (Not evan knowing what a relay was a few months ago!!) I have had issues with the fuel pump relay (404 under the ecu) which was not priming the fuel so I got a new one but decides to work when it wants too so I rewired it so i could do it manualy thinking this would be ok untill i got round to taking it to a garage and that was fine for a while but there are two other relays next to it which ive sort of worked out are the glow plug ones (457 and 614) the 614 has stoped clicking on but when i went to look up relays 614 and 457 they both come up as glow plug relays? So would like to know what these inderviduel relays do and why they have some issue working. One more thing, I have tested the fuel pump and it works fine. I evan put a new one in just incase! My car is an Audi A4 2.0Tdi convertible 2007

The fuel pump relay on this model is controlled by the ecu which is grounded by a switched earth at ecu pin no a52 & is inter-connected via the main engine control relay
