New member/poster. Treat me kindly

On 20th August 2015 I placed an order for a new A6 Saloon, S-Line, Garnet Red, Tech Pack Advanced, Ambient Lighting, Speed Limit Display. My dealer says that a build week of 42 has been reported and that I should therefore get the car in my hands mid-late November. I purchased the car via Carfile (carfile.net) who I must say have been very helpful indeed, expecially so given the discount I achieved through them. Sadly my local Audi dealer was unable to get anywhere close to the price.
Reading the posts on here there are not many from people with the 3L non-quattro model I have chosen. Everyone seems to be driving the 2L model or the Quattros - here's, hoping I haven't made an expensive mistake! Any 3L non-Quattro drivers out there, will I like it?

We're you happy with it on the test drive?

Didn't know you could get a 3l non Quattro? How's it going to out all that power down through 2 wheels?

Its what used to be the 204ps, do try to keep up at the back there! Its not a bad choice as you get all the refinement of the six. Nice colour as well!

In my opinion its a mistake on Audi's part to even offer the 3.0l TDI without quattro, terrible terrible mismatch. I mean I am well past my boy racer days so drive pretty sedately but all it takes is for the lightest smattering of rain and your front driving wheels are breaking traction, your ESC light it blinking and the car feeling horrible and unstable under you. OP lives in Birmingham as do I, so he might understand this, Hagley Road is on of the main routes into Birmingham City centre, along certain sections that route narrows considerably and the tarmac on some of those section is of questionable quality and workmanship especially as you head out of the city centre, in dry conditions its challenging with the car tramlining nervously, with the close proximity of adjacent traffic both coming and going, add a little wet to that and . . . . I no longer use that route when its particularly busy or it rains to put it succinctly.
So to sbelfield the extra £1750 or so is well well worth it, given my experiences and the garnered hindsight, were I in your position right now I would pay that twice over and have a smile on my face. Call Carfile tomorrow and amend that order, you still have time . . . . . but do it tomorrow.

Hmm OK .. I guess the question is "what are you expecting from the car?"

As whippy points out it will be more refined than the 4 pot Ultra - but that will be the main benefit. The latest Ultra 2.0 is 187bhp vs. about 215bhp(?) for the updated FWD 3.0 - although not that much less economical.
It has more torque and hits 60 somewhat quicker if you can get the power down.

As I said it depend what you are looking for...
If you are a driver who wants refinement, decent economy and some reasonable urge when overtaking then it is a great package.
If you want to be able to take advantage of the Audi 3.0 performance promise then it probably is not. It's a softly tuned 3.0 Tdi (my last C6 was more powerful) and without quattro it will be hard to put the power down.

So we circle back to the original question.. "What were your expectations?"

Thanks everyone for your useful comments.

As to a test drive, it proved impossible to locate a similar car, so no test drive undertaken. But, the various Audi staff I spoke to did say that it was a 'lovely engine' (things like that). As to my expectations well I spend a lot of time on the motorway so I want a luxury cruiser, quiet, refined, smooth, with a little bit of 'get up and go' when the need arises. I am no boy racer and ultimate performance wasn't my goal. I guess I could have achieved most of this with the 2L but just fancied a dose of 6 cylinder refinement. Here's hoping!

I think you chose well for your needs, its a superb engine that will transport you in style and comfort and I know you're going to love it.

I've just got my 3.0 (yesterday) - mine has quattro but wasnt picked for that, it was picked as a refined motorway cruiser where 6 cylinder was the main requirement. You will love it. you may miss quattro once a month if you do mainly cruising, so stop worrying and start looking forward to it coming!

driven a few of the v6 diesels on the prefacelift. The fwd were great unless you floor it too hard out a junction or away from the lights. Can't see the extra power in the fl making that huge a difference.
The v6(any of them)are much nicer to drive to the 2.0. The 2.0 needs to be worked hard to get going. The v6 suits the a6 as its a big heavy car.
I don't think you are going to miss much(other than a larger fuel bill)by not getting the Quattro if you are mainly motorway cruising.
I've just order my new a6(272) so looking forward to that. Only decided on the 272 Quattro as it was a deal I couldn't turn down otherwise i probably would have got the 3.0 fwd

Congratulations on your new purchase, from my experience the 3.0 FWD is an excellent choice. I had both an A7 & A6 with the same engine and as a long distance cruiser it's performs admirably. Sure it lacks a bit of grunt off the lights but I'm sure you overall will be very happy.

I don't understand the obsession with Quattro when it comes to cars pushing circa 200bhp, sure for performance vehicles but in most everyday cases do you really need 4WD? My 3.0 was absolutely fine through winter and my 2.0 Ultra is as good as gold too.

Enjoy your new car

A shame you couldn't get a test drive.

Everything is always a trade off. More toys, more horsepower, more refinement = more cost. I suspect if you tried a quattro you might wish you had gone for it. So my advice would be stick with what you have ordered and don't drive a quattro. What you never had you never miss.

One thing is for sure - you will love the car and it will be great.
