I have the disc based satnav system in my 2011 A4 Technik.
It does some things quite well, but has several shortcomings
including an inability to accept postcodes.
It is also now quite out of date, having its original 2011 map disc.
I called in at the dealer and was told that a new 2015 disc would cost
£179 and that I might also need a software update to make it function,
which might require an hours labour.

Has anyone yet come up with a shortcut to deal with this situation, or
a way of converting to the later system?

Buy a TomTom for £50! Or better still buy one with updates for life. That's what I've done - far superior system.
Doesn't help you updating your internal system - but the Audi way is the only way.

I agree that is a reasonable work round, but I would still quite like to achieve a more satisfactory solution if possible.

You can always use "other" people for updates not a dealer. To upgrade(i belive you have 3G low not HDD with sdcars) your system its to expensive.
