I need to get a Front Lower Suspension Arm replaced.
Have not got the time to do it myself and find myself having to rely on a local garage.

I Know the bolts can be troublesome but I guess with plent of wire brushing and wd40 should help when possible this should help with extracting the 7 fixings.

I've been quoted 2 to 2.5 hrs including diagnosis (putting car on ramp to asses damage) which seems excessive.

I would have thought that having all the tools and worshop that it should be swapped over in an hour max and what ever they charge minimum for the diagnosis ramp time if they so chose to charge for it.

Can any body tell me the book time to do this job please? or better still show the book time.

Thanks

autodata gives .9 hours a side. this is without having to find any tools in your toolbox and presuming the car is brand new and nothing goes wrong, and also presuming the person doing it has just done one, thats how they work out the times. its normal to add 25 - 50 % onto the job, so about 1.3 hours or so. now, for the other side you will already have your tools, so a little less. now the garage doesn't want to do a lower arm when its the arb link causing a noise, so a little time to check is acceptable. so really, 2 hours, maybe 2.5 is about the right time for BOTH arms. if this is for one, i apologise and they are taking the urine. incidentally, the autodata time includes putting the car up in the air.

zollaf,

Thank you very much for the reply, it's good to have the inside info on what the autodata gives to do a job.
Thanks for your time taken in looking up the infomation. I think adding 25-50 % on is accecptable but totally agree 2.5Hrs is taking the mick.

I'll go back and discuss things further with them.

Cheers

Unless you take on a severely abused and unlooked after B5.5 Passat. 9 hours to do passenger side arms and rod end etc. in January, in the rain and the cold. On axle stands. Hahaha. Very well rusted in. Top sockets were that worn I managed to pull the balls out by hand!! Just passed an MOT like that (did this one month after I bought it) lol.

Just thought I would share...

I managed to negotiate the price down, although they did seem a little puzzled as to how I knew about the workshop times, LOL
Thanks again for the info :-)
