View Full Version : Headlight Bulb Sensor Fault

Hi folks
Have a faulty bulb sensor I'm wondering how to solve - maybe I'm not searching the right terms can't see much about it in forums.
Nearside front headlight is said to be blown, but as soon as lights are turned on - either by auto or toggling switch - fault disappears as the bulb is working!
Any suggestions? Is there a way to clear this error code?
Cheers

The system is very sensitive to any resistance in the circuit.
Might be time to change the bulb.

I was not aware of any specific 'bulb sensors' as such, the system just monitors resistance, or breaks in the circuit that feed through to the MMI which then indicates (pun intended) where the error comes from.

If you try to change the bulb you may find that the connections could do with a clean up!

PS: It does help if you add your MY/engine size/transmission and what type of headlights (xenon etc) you have in your signature...as there may be something specific to your car...see mine below :)

My C6 did this as well and as the guys have said, it is sensitive. It invariably led to a failed bulb after a few months. It is an absolute bar steward of a job to do. Takes much too long and I would put it off until the bulb fails. Also, get someone with small hands to help you!

Yes to be fair hadn't even considered the bulb might be on it's way out! Impressed if the system is that sensitive I suppose.

I'll certainly open it up first and clean the connections up and see whats doing in there. Should really order a spare bulb set anyway. No small hands here so I am regularly infuriated by these! My wifes old Punto was the worst for that so far!

Will update my sig too ;)

You've still not advised if you have xenons or standard halogen bulbs?

If xenon's don't waste your money fitting OEM Xenarc bulbs at £80+ per side.

I've one of these and a cheapo bulb of ebay fitted and you can't see the difference

Big difference in price!

Oh, if you have a 3.0 you'll need to move the PAS reservoir out of the way for access, it helps to have a small torch and an angled inspection mirror to hand.

Sorry - standard headlights not Xenons and 2.0 tdi multitronic. By the looks of other threads this is a take to Audi and let them stick the bulbs in situation! Perhaps even do it for just the cost of the bulbs anyways in some cases I've read.

Am sure if you spend lots of dosh with your local dealer and you have a 'relationship' it is likely.

If not be prepared for them to quote you...not necessarily happy (for you) :biglaugh:

Would not advise opening it just to clean the connections-much worse than a Punto! Even the second time it took at least 30 mins and scraped hands. The plastic lugs on the headlamp housing are very easily broken too. If you are going to open it, change the bulb while you are there. Good luck.

It's actually not that hard to do, especially if you search the forum for a couple of very useful threads. Unless you spend £100+ per bulb at the dealer, they won't do it for free. Unless you already spend loads it them anyway.

I'm a technical halfwit but with the help of this forum can change both sides in under twenty minutes. Driver's side involves removing the engine cover (pulls off), air filter, housing and ducting (couple of screws/clips and an electrical connector. Passenger side is just moving the PAS reservoir. Don't get me wrong, it's not an "at the roadside" fix but it's not hard. And I have large hands. A slim teenager with small hands is often an asset in these situations.

Certainly not planning on spending loads at Audi! My local guy is generally decent and has looked after this car since it was new. I'll have a bash myself first though, can't be that bad!

In the meantime, I'll keep a sharp eye out for slim teenagers on the drive home... :D
