View Full Version : No Fans - No Air Con

Hi.
I have a 2004 Golf V 2.0 TDi. Recently, both fans have totally stopped working, causing the air con not to kick in when needed. It does blow hot air successfully, but not cold. Fans will not kick in, even on a long run, and temperature gauge will rise to 90, but never any higher.
If I put a 12v feed to the fans, they both run as they should. I understand that the smaller auxiliary fan also controls the air con pump, but have no idea as to why they are not working as they used to.
Any suggestions or advice on this would be gratefully received, as we are now touching temps in excess of 40 degs and the air con is becoming a necessity rather than a luxury!
Thanks

car should run at 90 at temperature guage
have you got an " econ" setting which would switch off the air con ........................ just using normal heating/ cooling rather than air con

Yeah, tried all sorts of settings. Main problem is the fact that neither fan is kicking in, therefore air compressor is not starting as aux fan not functioning!! Need to know what could cause the fans to stop working.

have you checked your fuses ?
the car should run at 90 on the dashboard so you cant say its overheating

VW A4: Radiator Fans Checking Low & High Speed - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdWNphYF-tE) check that out & looks promising in that the resistors maybe away

Fuses all fine. I am not saying that it is overheating. But for the last 8 years, the fans have kicked in and air con has worked fine. No matter how far I drive now, there are no fans working, and therefore no air conditioning!!
Have you checked fuse 8 in the box under the bonnet ?
The coolant temp is nothing to do with the aircon, get the klima scanned for faults, might be the g65 pressure switch, check the clutch centre nut.

As per the youtube video, the resistor on the fans has stopped working. Hooking up a direct feed to electrical connectors will show if fan dead

Where are the terminal contacts located on the fans that you put the 12v direct supply to to check if they are working? Is it just where you unplug the electrical connector at the bottom of the bigger fan? Or is there a connector on the smaller fan too? Am I correct in saying the smaller fan controls the bigger fan or is it the other way around? This is regarding a 2.0L BKD engine golf.
