While on holiday, when my A4 Avant SE TDi had been running fine, suddenly red oil warning signs and a noise to sink your heart. Stopped immediately, called Audi Assistance, vehicle went on to transporter to home garage 600 miles away, where it remains. New engine required after 10 months ownership and 8000 on the clock - thank God for warranties! Before the words "boy racer" spring to mind, I am "twirlie" and proud of it! Anybody with a similar story?

Not good news there mate, but at least it was covered..

Have you got any details regarding what happened?

Rick, I'm not knowledgeable on these sort of things, so even if it was explained to me, and I'm not sure I'd understand! I believe that the engine started to "break up" following an oil pump failure. But what caused the pump to fail without any warning whatsoever I have no idea. I am aware that the diesel engine does require more oil than my previous Audi petrol engine, and several times during the past 10 months I have had the orange oil warning light come on. I have immediately topped up the oil and carry a container with the recommended oil in the car for that reason. I had checked the oil (bloody awful dipstick!) a couple of days before the failure and it showed OK.

I am told by the dealer currently fixing the problem that they will reset the service to zero, so that gives me a bit of a break on those heavy service costs. However, I always change my car every 3-4 years and am hoping that a new engine won't be regarded as something to knock down its trade-in value.

If it was an oil pump failure, i understand why it has siezed..

In regards to a trade in, if you trade it in at Audi, it will make no differance, if you trade it in at a garage, they will never know.

i got mine with 45k on the clock, mine had a new engine at 40k... i purchased mine BECAUSE it had a new engine fitted by Audi, as i was looking at keeping it long term.

also, it meaned that it the engine was 40k newer than the rest of the car..
