what to look out for?

hi,i am looking at buying a mk3 golf gti 16 valve,the car is a 1996 plate with 90k on the clock.just wondering if there are any major things i shoulld be lookin out 4.i already own an 18t so this car would be 4 the girl freind

I just bought a Mk3 myself and the Heater leaked inside the car (in fact so bad it had been disconnected in the engine bay) and the fan only worked on speed 4.
The fan is easy enough to fix but you don't want to replace the heater matrix.
They both fairly common faults.
I've not had any problems (touch wood!) mechanically so i'll leave that input to some other members
