When I'm looking at a second hand A6 should I be checking to see that there is a SIM card installed? If it's not there is there a procedure to get a replacement? Finally am I correct in thinking that it uses the Vodaphone network in which case where I live coverage is patchy, is there an option to switch to O2 or another provider?
If none of this makes sense I apologise as I've never had such a technically advanced vehicle as this before :Blush2:

Think im right in saying that the car will take any data sim, or any SIM card that's standard size and enabled for data. Doesn't matter what provider.
You just need to check that there is a SIM card slot. There is no SIM card supplied with a new car. This slot is in cars that have the techpack or Audi connect services selected as an option.
As far im aware, this is right. I'm sure that if it's wrong it won't take long for someone to correct it..

Unlike some brands <coughBMWcough>, Audi do not provide the data connection for you (which was a slight annoyance when I got mine)
So any sim with a data connection (mobile broadband or phone) will do the job, or a phone that is connected to the system can be used as the data link
Also the correct options have to be on the car to have a sim slot.
Audi Connect in the FL
Mobile Phone preparation - High in the Pre-FL
Both of which come as part of the Tech Pack, or stand-alone in the case of the Mobile Phone Prep - High

The phone module is unlocked so can be used on any network with any SIM.

Basically what the others have so far is the case. There is no built in SIM/connection and you can use a SIM from any network. Just make sure it is a full sized SIM and if the car has the capability, there will be a slot between the two SD card slots for it to go in.
I went for a 3 SIM for £7.50 a month with 1GB of data. I chose this due to their coverage and the upgrade path... for £15 a month you can get 10GB of data which I thought would come in useful if I wanted to use the SIM in the MiFi device I have.
