Hi all, just sorted out the rattle from the rear of my car, it was the "pig tail" end of the spring that has broken off and was lying in the spring cup.

I now need to order a new spring (or 2) from TPS and get on with removing and refitting.

Has anyone done this job before, it looks simple enough, i have spring compressors, but i have heard of people lowering the rear subframe, is this needed, as i would not want to loose the rear subframe alignment (assuming the holes are slotted (adjustable)

any info on this job is much appreciate.

Cheers.

Haven't done a quattro but I wouldn't touch the subframe, put a jack under the lower arm and remove the shock and lower down the broken one should come out easier because of the break, the only thing is can you lower it far enough because of the driveshaft might need the compressors. When you order the springs check if there are any mounts top and bottom, the old ones might be shot.

I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure that I used spring compressors on a B6 Q Avant that I did a few years back, I as sure as I can be that the subfame wasn't disturbed, as this isn't required. As always replace springs in pairs not as single items.

I'd advise avoiding the ebay junk, and only fitting OEM or known brands, but you seem to be doing that anyway. Nice to see someone doing the job with proper parts :beerchug:

Nevos advice about the mount condition is also valid. I would tend to replace them as a matter of course. Saves the aggro of doing the job all over again at another date.
