I'm new on here and newly A4 owner. Sorry if this is on here a million times already but just joined :-)

I only got 1 key with the car and was wondering if possible to build a spare in the following way:

Buy second hand key (from ebay for approx £15 with all internals)

Buy new case with Blank blade (again ebay for approx £10)

Get blade cut at local key cutters (£10)

And have a mate with Vag-Com software so supply with beer to re-program the transponder.

Would this work? Trying to save on £200 at dealer prices.

Cheers

nope.

Especially this part.

You'll need to code the key to the immobiliser too.

For the sake of it, I'd pay the £200, have the spare key and worry no further.

It's one of the cheapest bills you'll face in a four ring ;)

Shame. Was hoping I could find a way round it. Thanks for the reply

On some models the code for the car is on a server in Germany nobody can access it anyway. A locksmith with VAG tacho or similar may be able to get the code on an older car but not for free! You cannot reprogram a transponder either you'd need a virgin transponder

How about the older Audi's? Like mine for example, 2003 A6 1.9. I have the two keys, but in my house, a 3rd would not go astray. Is it possible to get a spare key , transponder etc, that will work,, but without disturbing the main dealers?

JMR I believe it would work on your car. You need a key either flip or standard with an HAA blade (I think) and a virgin transponder. You then need someone with VAG tacho or similar to extract the code and VCDS to program the key. Simples

I couldn't agree more with you on that Eshrules.

One of my skinflint rellies tried buying the ebay junk and getting keys cut ect all of which cost time and money (though in farness not a lot of the latter). I had the car and it's tighter than a ducks bottom owner visit us for a 'free holiday and check over of the car' I heard all the moans about needing another key, several times during the holiday. (A second key was supplied with the car but was lost.) I got fed up with all the moaning and groaning, so I simply took the car and it's owner on a little mystery drive to an Audi main agent. Result, one new key supplied and a slightly shocked wallet plus several homeless moths, and as a bonus, a silent tight fisted rellie!

For some strange reason I've not heard from the rellie since. I suspect that he's going elsewhere for his free breaks!

LOL be careful what you say on-line. Apparently there's 1.3 billion "lone wolves" coming for me. Where's Richard the Lionheart when you need him?

I'm not too far away from a few of them at the moment... the wolves, I mean, not the virgins....( I'm not sure about them... ). I'm not sure about Richards whereabouts, at the moment, but a mere stone's throw away is the burial place of Saladin.. his arch enemy..:o
