View Full Version : Rear Diff Change
I need to remove the rear diff on my B7 Avant Quattro for a re-build. Can any one advise on some of the key things to look out for in advance of the removal, e.g. specific tools needed, things not to do etc.
It is a 3.0 TDI with manual gearbox.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I'm afraid I can't help regarding the removal, I was wondering why it needs a rebuild?
Mike.
There is an annoying clunk coming from rear of the car under acceleration between in 1st/2nd/3rd gears. The centre propshaft bearing was badly worn and has been replaced with a brand new genuine Audi propshaft, which we thought was the problem. Everything else has been fully inspected at the rear - bearings/bushes/wheels/tyres/brakes etc. When you twist the prop by hand you can hear a 'clicking' noise from inside the diff which indicates worn friction plates.
Cheers

Is it a limited slip diff?
I ask as i dont think my wifes 3.0tdi auto is.
The noise could just be the pinion gear backlash.
It is an LSD. If it is the pinion gear, it shouldn't make 3/4 loud thuds in 1st and 2nd gear as it is doing.
