Not sure where i should have posted sorry,so many sub sections wasnt sure which to put it in
Anyway....ive just got a second hand central locking unit (that goes in the boot) and the numbers are identical, apart from the new one has an E at the end which i didnt realise when i bought it,is it still compatable? Ive got a 97 1.9tdi avant and this unit is from a 2001 ... i dont want to waste my money getting the key recoded if its not the right one ....hubby did plug it in,and it set the hazzourd lights off and kicked the imobiliser in... we just wanted to see what it would do lol...also any recommendations on where i can go for key coding in the northampton area? Our friend mechanic is away, and as our windows wont work until its done,id rather not wait xx thanks in advance x

Why are you getting keys coded?

Because its a whole new unit?

So this is a 97 A4 Avant with none functioning central locking and AC. What is the full part number of the central locking pump your car originally has?

Crasher will point you in the right direction but no key coding is needed for the pump

What do we need to do then to get this pump to connect with our key?? We only have 1 key btw,and were arent confident enough to swap circuit boards xx the code on the old unit it 8lo862257 and the new units number is 8lo862257e

8L0 862 257 changed to 8L0 862 257 G for 1999 which is the only correct number that will replace 8L0 862 257. Your replacement part 8L0 862 257 E immediately became 8L0 862 257 A and in 1997 became 8L0 862 257 (your original), then 8L0 862 257 G (the one you theoretically need) for 1999 so it should not have been in a 2001 in the first place but it is OK for yours, but a UK model should use 8L0 862 257 P. Whatever, with only one key, diagnostic computer equipment will be required to ATTEMPT to program it in. If that lot leaves you confused, I am not surprised, VAG part number supersessions can make my head spin.
