Hi
I have an A6 2.7 tdi with 53,000 mile on it. I’ve owned it for 6 years and its been a great car
But I now have the dreaded engine management light come on 3 times in the last 10 weeks, for inlet manifold tolerance.
Reading on here there is a repair kit and I’ve spoken to 2 indi’s and audi in Essex

1. 1 Audi said replace both manifolds at a cost of 2 arms and a leg

2. Local Indi have recommended having both manifolds replaced for £1200. The indi had not heard of the repair kit??

3. The other local indi has fitted the repair kit and advised with my low mileage the repair kit should last to 80k when the manifolds would need replacing. But he also said there no guarantee the repair kit will fix this issue and I could have wasted £250 and still end up with another bill for new manifolds.

4 I also spoke to another indi garage 40miles away and they said if the arm isn’t broken then it wasn’t worth using the repair kit and best to change the manifolds

Reading on the forum I am tempted to have ago at using the repair kit myself but is it really as easy to do with it all in situ?? If that fails then I know its new manifolds and I would have only lost the cost of the repair kit. Or take the gamble with the indi repair job

Any help or advise would be much appreciated

M

A forum sponsor does a decent price on reconditioned inlets

AirShox Brochure_EN.pdf - Google Drive (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6ybetYJ0wwMa0sySmF4SS1EbzA/view?usp=sharing)

Company is called Airshox

I tend to agree with the 3rd statement. Fitting the repair kit, which is just the external linkage, will take out some of the free play that results in the warning light and buy some time but eventually that won't be sufficient and manifold replacement will be necessary.

The repair linkages are around a tenner a side from the dealer. Refurbed manifolds can be had for a good price here... if you are handy with tools then if its has just started then remove the intake manifolds and clean the carbon from inside the manifolds.

You may find that a small build up a causing a swirl flap from operating properly.

My wife and I both have 3.0 tdi cars, mine an Allroad, hers A4 cabriolet, had mine done at Audi Poitiers cost €2200 and the motors were not replaced, had my wife's done, bought reconditioned manifolds with reinforced pivot bearings with motors included from ebay, had them fitted at a VW garage, total cost about €700, you can guess what I would recommend

+1 for Airshox.

It's not difficult to take the manifolds off (there is one bracket/bolt on each side that take a little persuasion with a big screwdriver)

Clean the manifolds, and replace the linkages and bearings as a minimum.

When you change the first spindle look VERY carefully at how it went together - it's REALLY annoying if you end up taking things apart to double check!

Airshox also do the whole thing - they are sponsors here (I think?)

I also had issues with one motor - there are programming issues, although I think I have them dealt with and have a wiring issue too.

Well worth doing properly

Thanks for all the responces.
Just an update as to what Ive done. The light was coming on every other day so
I have decided to go for the repair kit which I got from the local dealership and fix them myself. With the view that this is a temporary fix and I will need to replace the manifolds hopefully using the recondition ones from Germany if i can find someone to fit them(anyone near chelsmford??)
Fitting the kit was very easy on the passenger side but the driver side proved very difficult and in the end I just replaced the arm(50% newer being better then zero%)
In all it took me 40minutes. A word of caution when removing the old metal clip that holds the joint that fits into the manifold when it pings off it flys!! I would put a cotton sheet over the engine next time as it will be easier to find.
I also put some BG244 in the fuel tank. No idea if it will help or not but cant do any harm?
So far 300miles and the light is off(touch wood)
Cheers
