starting problem, possibly injector fault ?

hi, i have the 3.0tdi engine and i have a starting problem.
when starting from cold it takes about 10 seconds of cranking before it will start and then theres a plume of greyish smoke that soon clears.
also sometimes when turned off and left for roughly 5-20 mins upon starting the engine will either turn very slowly or not at all as if it is locking up, upon second attempt it will fire up.
i was thinking the injectors but usually with injector failiure of these engines they are smokey when left to idle which mine does not.
my oil level has remained the same for the last 5 month, there are no fault codes stored, the battery is healthy and fully charged.
can anyone help with any ideas ?
i have read that its possibly fuel pressure related.

First thing Iwould do is clean the connections to the starter motor and earths from the battery,turning over slowly has got to be the starter.
